The Pit Stop Report

12 Days of Sniffmas

The QR code on your 12 Days of Sniffmas insert card lands here. Each day opens on its date with the Co-Pilot on the sticker, what is in the bag, what the label says and where to get a full bag.

The box is meant to be opened one bag a night from December 13, so Christmas Eve is Day 12. A box that arrives as a Christmas gift starts December 25 and runs to January 5.

Day 1

Ella's cheese bites

Co-Pilot: Ella

Ella

Ella rides shotgun in the red Camaro and treats every drive-thru window like a cheese stop. Ella has been wrong every time and has not stopped checking.

In your calendar bag

3 oz

cheese bites, Ella's bag

About the treat

Cheddar cheese, freeze dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania until it is crunchy and dry rather than soft and greasy.

The pieces start small and break smaller, so they hand out by the dozen on a walk, and the bag travels clean in a pocket or a treat pouch. They also crumble over kibble.

On the label

Ingredients: Cheddar cheese

Guaranteed analysis, as printed on the package label:

  • Crude Protein (min): 34%
  • Crude Fat (min): 50%
  • Crude Fiber (max): 4%
  • Moisture (max): 6%
  • Metabolizable Energy: 5,421 kcal ME/kg (approximately 153.7 kcal/oz)

Handling

Feed as a treat or reward. Not a complete diet. Provide fresh water and supervise while snacking. Once the cheddar is open, reseal the bag and keep it cool and dry. Cheddar is dairy, so this is not the treat for a dog with dairy sensitivities.

Day 2

Sage's Christmas Pup-Ornaut (Green Spirulina and Carrots)

Co-Pilot: Sage

Sage

Sage wore the sweater for the photo and wanted it off by the end of the driveway. Showroom versus track, and Sage knows the difference.

In your calendar bag

0.5 oz

Christmas Pup-Ornaut (Green Spirulina and Carrots), Sage's bag

About the treat

The green Pup-Ornaut: freeze-dried dog ice cream made from nonfat Greek yogurt with carrots and green spirulina, with Christmas trees and Santas mixed in with the plain pieces. We make it in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania.

It starts as frozen yogurt and comes out of the freeze dryer light and crunchy, so it rides in a glovebox without a cooler. It is brittle by nature, so expect a chipped tree or two in the bag.

On the label

Ingredients: Nonfat Greek yogurt, carrots, green spirulina

Guaranteed analysis, as printed on the package label:

  • Crude Protein (min) 8%
  • Crude Fat (min) 0.5%
  • Crude Fiber (max) 12%
  • Moisture (max) 10%

Handling

Feed as a treat, reward, or topper. Intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. Always supervise while feeding and provide fresh drinking water. Day 3

Nahla's beef liver

Co-Pilot: Nahla

Nahla

Nahla can hear a liver bag open two rooms away with the radio on. We have tested this more often than we would like to admit.

In your calendar bag

2 oz

beef liver, Nahla's bag

About the treat

One ingredient: beef liver, freeze dried raw in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and nothing else goes in the bag.

It smells strong and breaks into pea-sized pieces in your fingers, so one piece turns into several rewards. The pieces are light and dry instead of greasy, which matters when the bag lives in a jacket pocket.

On the label

Ingredients: Beef liver

Guaranteed analysis, as printed on the package label:

  • Crude Protein (min): 62%
  • Crude Fat (min): 5%
  • Crude Fiber (max): 9%
  • Moisture (max): 10%
  • Calorie Content (calculated): 2,879 kcal ME/kg, 81.6 kcal ME/oz

Handling

From the label: feed as a treat, reward, or topper. Intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. Always supervise while feeding and provide fresh drinking water. Not intended as a complete and balanced diet. Store in a cool, dry place, reseal after opening, and wash hands after handling. This liver is freeze dried raw. Once the bag is open, use it within 30 days.

Day 4

Zippy's beef heart

Co-Pilot: Zippy

Zippy

Zippy wore the antlers for the whole photo shoot without one complaint, which tells you exactly what was waiting in the other hand.

In your calendar bag

2 oz

beef heart, Zippy's bag

About the treat

Beef heart, freeze dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Heart is firmer than liver and milder in smell.

Snap a piece in two, then in two again, and one piece has become a handful of rewards. The bits are dry and not greasy, and they are light in a pouch.

On the label

Ingredients: Beef heart

Guaranteed analysis, as printed on the package label:

  • Crude Protein (min): 68%
  • Crude Fat (min): 9%
  • Crude Fiber (max): 13%

Day 5

Bailey's strawberry Pup-Ornaut

Co-Pilot: Bailey

Bailey

Bailey brought a satchel to the photo shoot. Nobody knows what is in it, and Bailey is not saying.

In your calendar bag

0.5 oz

strawberry Pup-Ornaut, Bailey's bag

About the treat

Strawberry dog ice cream, freeze-dried: nonfat Greek yogurt and strawberry, with small hearts mixed through the bag. It is made in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania, the same way as the rest of the Pup-Ornaut line.

Freeze drying turns strawberry paler than the fresh fruit, so these are pale pink, not candy red. The pieces are brittle, and a few hearts will arrive with a chipped edge.

On the label

Ingredients: Nonfat Greek yogurt, strawberry

Guaranteed analysis: see the product page.

Handling

An occasional treat, not a complete diet. Store it in a cool, dry place and reseal the bag after opening. Yogurt is dairy.

Day 6

Ollie's Captain's Catch

Co-Pilot: Oliver, Ollie for short

Ollie

Ollie showed up wrapped in string lights like a show car at a holiday cruise night, then fell asleep in them. Show cars rarely do that.

In your calendar bag

0.375 oz

Captain's Catch, Ollie's bag

About the treat

Most of our seafood treats are one species to a bag, and Captain's Catch is the exception: a freeze-dried medley of squid, octopus, shrimp, clam and mussel. Five ingredients in one bag.

The pieces vary in size and shape from item to item, so two handfuls never look alike. Cats can have it too: serve small pieces or crumble some over food. Made in Malvern, Pennsylvania with imported ingredients.

On the label

Ingredients: Squid, octopus, shrimp, clam, mussel

Guaranteed analysis, as printed on the package label:

  • Crude Protein (min): 67%
  • Crude Fat (min): 4%
  • Crude Fiber (max): 18%
  • Moisture (max): 16%
  • Metabolizable Energy: 2,271 kcal ME/kg (approximately 64.4 kcal/oz)

Day 7

Tallulah's quail eggs

Co-Pilot: Tallulah

Tallulah

Tallulah eats one egg at a time and checks in with you between eggs, like a driver checking the mirror before every lane change.

In your calendar bag

6 eggs

quail eggs, Tallulah's bag

About the treat

Whole raw quail eggs, freeze dried with the shell on: yolk, white and shell. The shell goes brittle, so the egg crunches down shell and all.

These are fragile, and a cracked egg or some shell dust in the bag is normal. Hand one over whole, crush it over a meal, or soak it briefly in warm water for a softer texture.

On the label

Ingredients: Raw, whole quail eggs

Guaranteed analysis, as printed on the package label:

  • Crude Protein (min): 31%
  • Crude Fat (min): 26%
  • Crude Fiber (max): 10%
  • Moisture (max): 10%
  • Metabolizable Energy: 4,087 kcal ME/kg (approximately 115.9 kcal/oz)

Handling

Feed as a treat or meal topper. Not intended as a complete diet. Provide fresh water at all times and supervise while feeding. Reseal the bag of eggs after opening and keep it in a cool, dry place. Wash your hands after handling them, as with any raw protein.

Day 8

Mia's tripe

Co-Pilot: Mia

Mia

Mia wore the light-up antlers for the photo and lit up even brighter when the tripe bag came out. Only one of those runs on batteries.

In your calendar bag

1 oz

tripe, Mia's bag

About the treat

Green beef tripe, freeze-dried raw, with one ingredient on the label: beef tripe.

We will say it before you open the bag: tripe smells. Freeze-drying makes it milder than raw tripe, and milder is not the same as mild. Break a piece into bite-sized bits as a reward, or crumble it over kibble as a topper.

On the label

Ingredients: Beef tripe

Guaranteed analysis, as printed on the package label:

  • Crude Protein (min): 49%
  • Crude Fat (min): 31%
  • Crude Fiber (max): 13%
  • Moisture (max): 10%
  • Metabolizable Energy: 4,211 kcal ME/kg (approximately 119.4 kcal/oz)

Handling

Feed as a treat or meal topper. Not intended as a complete diet. Provide fresh water at all times and supervise while feeding. Press the tripe bag shut after every handful and keep it somewhere cool and dry. A closed bag rides fine in a door pocket. An open one announces itself.

Day 9

Shadow's salmon bites

Co-Pilot: Shadow

Shadow

Shadow is a black dog, which makes Shadow hard to photograph and easy to find. Check wherever the salmon is.

In your calendar bag

0.5 oz

salmon bites, Shadow's bag

About the treat

Wild-caught pink salmon and nothing else, freeze-dried in small batches with no fillers or preservatives. Made in Malvern, Pennsylvania from imported fish.

The pieces are medium sized and break into small, quick rewards, or crumble over kibble as a topper. Cats can have it too: break a piece small or crumble it over food.

Day 10

Mae's mussels

Co-Pilot: Mae

Mae

Mae has the look of a dog who already knows what is for dinner. Today it is mussels, and Mae did not ask for a second opinion.

In your calendar bag

0.75 oz

mussels, Mae's bag

About the treat

Blue-lipped mussels, freeze-dried whole, and that is the entire recipe. Made in Malvern, Pennsylvania from imported mussels.

Each one is small, sized for a quick bite, and it is an odd thing to hand a dog. That is a fair share of the appeal. Break one up for a few small rewards or crumble it over a meal. Cats are in on these too, and the size suits a cat.

On the label

Ingredients: Blue-lipped mussels

Guaranteed analysis, as printed on the package label:

  • Crude Protein (min): 59%
  • Crude Fat (min): 4%
  • Crude Fiber (max): 6%

Handling

Feed as a treat or topper. Not intended as a complete diet. Provide fresh water and supervise while feeding. After opening, reseal the bag and keep it in a cool, dry place. Mussels are rich, so keep the count low.

Day 11

Boba's anchovies

Co-Pilot: Boba, one of our two cats

Boba

Boba is a cat, so Boba did not pose for this sticker so much as allow it. Day 11 is the day the cat wins.

In your calendar bag

0.5 oz

anchovies, Boba's bag

About the treat

Whole anchovies, freeze-dried raw, and the first thing to know is the smell: moderate, the natural smell of whole fish. We are not going to apologize for it. Made in Malvern, Pennsylvania from imported fish.

Feed them whole or broken into smaller pieces. For a cat, offer a whole anchovy or crumble one over food. Size, shape and color vary from fish to fish.

On the label

Ingredients: Anchovies (Stolephorus chinensis)

Day 12

Mocha's baby octopus

Co-Pilot: Mocha, our other cat

Mocha

Mocha slept through the photo shoot and still got the last day of the calendar. Some of us race to the finish line, and some of us nap across it.

In your calendar bag

1 octopus

baby octopus, Mocha's bag

About the treat

A whole baby octopus with the tentacles intact, freeze-dried in small batches with nothing added. It looks like what it is, and nobody will mistake it for a biscuit. Made in Malvern, Pennsylvania with imported ingredients.

Size and texture differ from one octopus to the next, and the smell is strong, the way seafood is. Feed a dog a piece whole or broken up. For a cat, serve one whole or crumble it over food.
