Meet the K9 Cruiser: Building the Ultimate Dog-Friendly Daily Driver
Share
Every treat brand needs a delivery vehicle, but ours needed to do more than haul boxes — it needed to be the ultimate co-pilot mobile. Enter the K9 Cruiser: our dog-friendly daily driver, wrapped and dialed in with help from our friends at the shop. More miles, more events, more adventures with Ella riding shotgun. Here's the story — and how you can set up any car for safe, comfy dog travel.
Why We Built a Dog-Friendly Daily Driver
As we added more events across the region, we needed a rig that could carry treats, gear, and our favorite co-pilot in comfort and safety. A fresh wrap turned it into a rolling billboard (Treat Patrol, officially on duty), but the real focus was making it genuinely dog-friendly — because we practice what we preach about safe travel.
How to Set Up Any Car for Your Co-Pilot
You don't need a custom build to travel safely with your dog. Here's the setup that matters most.
1. Restraint = Safety
An unrestrained dog is a risk to themselves and everyone in the car. Use a crash-tested harness or a secured crate. Organizations like the Center for Pet Safety test and certify travel restraints, and the AAA recommends restraining pets rather than letting them roam the cabin.
2. Protect Your Interior
A quality seat cover or hammock saves your seats from fur, mud, and the occasional drool tsunami — and gives your dog a comfy, grippy surface.
3. Climate and Comfort
Keep the cabin comfortable, never leave your dog in a parked car, and bring a familiar blanket or bed for longer trips.
4. The Adventure Kit
Stock a go-bag: collapsible bowls, water, waste bags, a spare leash, and mess-free treats. Freeze-dried beef liver is our glovebox staple — it won't melt or leak.
Building Community Through the Build
Half the fun of the K9 Cruiser was doing it with our community — the shop that brought the vision to life, the friends who hyped it up, and everyone who's flagged us down on the road just to say hi. That's the Sniff & Shift way: cars, dogs, and community, all in one build.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a car dog-friendly?
Safe restraint, protected seating, good climate control, and a stocked travel kit. You don't need a special vehicle — just the right setup.
Is a harness or a crate safer?
Both can be safe when crash-tested and properly secured. A well-fitted, tested harness or a strapped-down crate both beat an unrestrained dog.
How do I keep my car clean with a dog?
Use a seat cover or hammock, keep a towel handy, and choose dry, low-grease treats to minimize mess.
What treats travel best?
Freeze-dried, single-ingredient treats — they're lightweight, shelf-stable, and won't spoil in the car.
