How freeze-drying works

The raw ingredient goes into the chamber frozen. A vacuum then pulls the ice straight out as vapor at low temperature, so the water leaves without anything being cooked. What is left keeps the look, smell and structure of the raw piece, weighs a fraction of what it did, and stays shelf stable in a sealed bag. Add a splash of water and it softens back. That is why a freeze-dried liver cube smells like liver to a dog across a parking lot, and why it rides in a pocket with no cooler.

Choosing by protein and dog size

Start with a protein your dog already eats well. Beef is the easy first pick: beef liver for smell and softness, beef heart for a leaner, chewier bite, and green tripe for dogs that go wild for strong smells. Fish comes next: whole sardines and anchovies are small, oily and popular with dogs and cats alike. For a dog that needs a protein it has never had, baby octopus, frog legs and scallops are about as new as it gets.

Size matters more for the treat than for the dog. Small dogs and puppies do well with liver, heart and cheddar bites, because each piece breaks into crumbs under a thumbnail. Medium and large dogs can take a whole sardine, a quail egg or a shrimp in one go. Everything here snaps smaller, so when in doubt buy the protein your dog wants and break it down.

Portioning by treat

Treats are extras, not meals. A common rule of thumb is to keep them under about ten percent of what your dog eats in a day. In practice that is a few liver or heart pieces per training session for a small dog and a small handful for a big one, a couple of sardines or anchovies as a snack, or one quail egg, shrimp or scallop as a single reward. Organ meats like liver are rich, so start with less and see how your dog does. Bags run from 1.5 ounces up to 6 ounces on the core proteins, and the quail eggs come in counts from 9 to 288.

Storage

Keep the bag sealed and dry at room temperature. Moisture is the only thing these treats mind; the freezer is not needed and the glovebox is fine. Squeeze the air out, press the zip closed and use the bag within a few weeks of opening for the crispest texture. Crumbs at the bottom are still treats: sprinkle them on dinner as a topper. Our storage guide has the details.

What single ingredient means in our kitchen

When a bag says beef liver, the label is the ingredient list: beef liver and nothing else. No preservatives, colors, flavors or fillers, which is exactly why the bag has to stay sealed. A few items on this page are recipes rather than one ingredient, such as cheddar bites and the Captain's Catch seafood medley, and every product page lists exactly what is inside.

Freeze-dried dog treat questions

Are these treats raw?

Yes. Freeze-drying removes water without heat, so the meat, fish and eggs stay raw and shelf stable. Wash your hands after handling, the same as with any raw meat.

Can puppies have freeze-dried treats?

Puppies that are eating solid food can have them in small pieces. Liver and heart break down smallest. Keep portions modest and introduce one new protein at a time.

Do freeze-dried treats need to be refrigerated?

No. Sealed and dry at room temperature is all they need, before and after opening.

Where are Sniff and Shift treats made?

In our kitchen in Malvern, Chester County, Pennsylvania, in small batches. Ella, the shop dog, tests every batch before it goes in a bag.

How fast do orders ship?

Treats from our kitchen ship within one business day, and shipping is free on orders over $50.

How is this page different from The Garage?

This page is only the freeze-dried treats made in our kitchen. The Garage is everything we make, including the air-dried chews, toys and poop bags.

What's in the Gas Division

Land: beef liver, beef heart, green tripe, cheddar bites and whole quail eggs. Sea: pink salmon, whole sardines, sardine heads, minnows, anchovies, shrimp, scallops, blue-lipped mussels and the Captain's Catch medley. Off the usual map: baby octopus and frog legs for dogs that have tried everything else. For dessert, Pup-Ornaut freeze-dried dog ice cream. If you would rather not choose, Modified Monthly sends a custom box.

Are freeze-dried treats better than baked treats?

Different job. A baked biscuit is mostly flour with some meat flavor; a freeze-dried liver cube is liver. If you want a reward that works at a distance, in the rain, or next to a folding chair at a car show, the one that smells like meat wins. Baked treats are cheaper per piece and that is their honest advantage.

Are freeze-dried dog treats safe?

Ours are single-ingredient meat, fish or egg with no preservatives, colors or fillers, which is why the bag needs to stay sealed and dry between sessions. Treats are extras, not meals: keep them under about ten percent of your dog's daily food. If your dog is on a prescription or elimination diet, or has a health condition, ask your veterinarian before adding any new protein.

Which freeze-dried treat is best?

For recall and training, start with liver or heart: soft enough to break small, strong enough to smell across a field. For picky eaters, sardines or salmon. For dogs that need a new protein, octopus, frog legs or scallops. For a road trip, anything in this collection: nothing here needs a cooler.

How much does freeze-drying change the meat?

Very little, which is the point. Water is removed under vacuum at low temperature instead of with heat, so the treat keeps the look, smell and structure of the raw ingredient. Add a little water and it softens back. That also makes these useful as a food topper for a dog that is bored of the bowl.

Looking for something to chew on longer? The air-dried chews live in their own bay. Cats get their own menu at freeze-dried cat treats. Everything we make is in The Garage.
