Here's the thing about doodles: they're a cross, which means the generalizations are looser than usual. But three tendencies come up often enough to shape how you shop.

1. They are extremely smart and extremely food-motivated

This is a gift and a trap. A doodle will learn a behavior fast — and will also learn, just as fast, exactly how to work you for snacks. The combination means they're a joy to train and easy to overfeed.

2. Sensitive stomachs are common

Enough doodle owners report digestive sensitivity that it's worth defaulting to caution. The single most useful rule: keep the ingredient list to one line. 3. That coat is a full-time job

Portion control, because doodles will not do it for you

Standard doodles are big dogs, and mini doodles are small dogs, and they get treated the same because they look the same. They shouldn't. A 20-pound mini has a treat budget a fraction of a 60-pound standard's.

For a sensitive doodle, don't introduce three new things on the same weekend.

1. One new protein at a time.
2. Small amount for two or three days.
