Dog Food Comparison Tool
This dog food comparison tool lets you search complete-and-balanced foods and compare dog foods side by side: ingredients, guaranteed analysis, price per pound, and sourcing, all pulled from manufacturer materials. Pick up to four foods to build a side-by-side chart before you decide what to feed. Many of the foods listed here can be ordered through The Family Pet, our partner store, so you can go straight from comparison to checkout.
Compiled and maintained by Asher Price, founder of Sniff and Shift in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Every number on this page is transcribed from the maker's own product page and linked from the food's spec sheet. We do not rank foods and we take no payment for placement. How we compare dog foods. Compare the food, then pick the treat
Every food in this tool carries its maker's own complete and balanced statement, so the comparison stays about ingredients, guaranteed analysis and price. Treats are the other part of the day. Ours are one ingredient, freeze-dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and they pair with any food on this list. The rail below shows four of our best sellers.
Dog Food Comparison Tool 🥣
One garage for all the specs. Search complete-and-balanced dog foods (no treats, no toppers), then pick up to 4 to compare side by side, ingredients, guaranteed analysis, sourcing, pricing, and more, pulled from manufacturer materials with links to every source.
All information is consolidated from publicly available manufacturer materials and linked sources. It is provided for convenience only, is not medical or nutritional advice, and Sniff and Shift has not tested or evaluated any product listed. Formulas change, always verify on the current package and consult your veterinarian.
Every food in this tool has a full spec sheet in the Dog Food Library, or browse the library by brand. For a brand by brand read, see our brand comparisons.
How to compare dog foods side by side
Pick up to four foods above, press Compare, and read the chart in this order.
Start with the ingredient list. Ingredients are listed by weight before cooking, so the first five tell you what the food is mostly made of. Compare like with like: a dry kibble and a fresh food list very differently because of water content.
Then read the guaranteed analysis. Protein, fat, fiber and moisture are the four numbers every label carries. Moisture matters here too, since a wet food near 78 percent moisture shows a low protein number that is not comparable to a kibble near 10 percent moisture until you account for the water.
Check the life stage statement on the label, which says whether the maker formulated the food for adults, growth, or all life stages.
Then price per pound and calories per cup, because a food that costs more per bag can cost less per meal if the feeding amount is smaller.
Last, sourcing and where it is made, both pulled from the manufacturer's own materials with a link to the source.
One boundary to be clear about: Sniff and Shift does not make dog food. The foods here can be ordered through The Family Pet, our partner store, and ship separately from the partner. What we do make are single ingredient freeze-dried treats from our kitchen in Malvern, Pennsylvania, which are treats, not meals.
Dog Food Comparison Questions
What is the best website to compare dog food?
It depends on what you want to compare. Dog Food Advisor publishes editorial ratings and recall history. All About Dog Food, a UK site, scores foods on ingredient quality. Our Dog Food Comparison Tool does one narrower job: it puts the label numbers for any two foods side by side, with a link to the maker's own page for every figure, so you can check the source yourself. Use ours when you want the raw numbers, and use the others when you want an opinion.
What is the number one healthiest dog food?
There is no single answer, and any site that gives you one is guessing about your dog. Dogs differ by age, size, activity and what they tolerate, and the same food can suit one dog and not another. What a label does let you compare is real: the first five ingredients, the guaranteed analysis, the AAFCO statement and the calories per cup. This tool shows those for every food, and your veterinarian is the right person to turn them into a choice for your dog.
What are the top five best foods for dogs?
We do not publish a ranking, because a top five would have to ignore the dog. What we can do is show you the same five facts for every food in the library so you can build your own shortlist. Start with the life stage on the AAFCO statement, then the first ingredients, then the protein and fat figures, then the price per pound once you know the bag weight.
What are the ten healthiest dog foods?
Same answer as above, and for the same reason. A list of ten is an editorial opinion, not a measurement. Our library holds hundreds of complete and balanced foods with the maker's own numbers on each one. Pick any two, press Compare, and the table shows where they actually differ.
