How to Measure Your Dog for a No-Pull Harness

Where to put the tape

2 Hounds Design says to measure around the largest part of the chest, right behind the front legs. Skip the neck, skip the belly, and don't measure over a thick coat if you can help it. Pull the tape snug but not tight, the way a belt should sit, and write the number down before you forget it. If your dog fidgets, do it twice and use the number that repeats.

Reading the size chart

Once you have that chest number, match it to the size chart on the product page rather than guessing from your dog's weight or breed. The maker's chart says to choose the smallest size that still fits, not the size in the middle that feels like the easy default. A harness that runs a little snug at the smallest fitting size will settle in faster than one that's loose everywhere, and a loose front strap is the main thing you're trying to avoid on a no pull design.

Picking a width

Fitting it once it arrives

When the harness shows up, put it on in a calm spot, not on the way out the door. You should be able to slide two fingers flat under every strap without forcing it. Check the front strap across the chest and the girth strap behind the front legs separately, since a harness can look right and still be loose in one spot. Walk your dog around the yard or the kitchen before the first real outing so you can see how the straps settle with movement, not just standing still.

Re-measuring a growing or changing dog

Puppies, dogs coming off a diet, and dogs who put on winter weight can all outgrow a chest measurement without you noticing day to day. If a harness that used to sit right now leaves marks, rides up toward the throat, or feels loose in the girth strap, take the tape measure out again rather than assuming the harness has stretched. Go with the smaller of the two sizes first, since a harness that's slightly snug when new tends to fit better once it's on than one that starts loose everywhere. If it still feels tight all over after a proper fitting, size up.

Does the width change the size range?

No, both the 5/8 inch and 1 inch webbing come in the same XS to XXL range. The width is more about your dog's build and how sturdy a strap you want, not a separate sizing scale.

Can I measure my dog in a thick winter coat?

It's better not to. A coat adds bulk that isn't really there, and it can push you toward a size that ends up loose once the coat comes off. Measure against the skin or a light layer whenever you can.
