Matching a dog collar, leash, bandana and bow: prints that fit

A leash or a bandana in the same print

Some prints go further than the collar. The leash comes in 4 foot and 6 foot lengths with a padded grip. The bandana is a double sided tie on style, sized small for necks up to 13 inches, medium up to 18 inches, and large up to 22 inches, and it runs $20 to $22 depending on size. Not every print carries a leash or a bandana version. August and Leighton, for instance, stop at the collar and move over to a bow instead, so check the collection page for what is actually offered under a given name before you build a whole set around it.

Where the bow fits

A bow tie or a babe bow is the easiest way to add a print to a collar you already own, since both styles slide onto any collar with two elastic loops rather than needing their own strap. They come in small and large for $15 each. August is a jewel toned purple velvet, and Leighton is a black gingham, so either one can sit on top of a plain collar in the same color family, or on the matching August or Leighton collar itself. This is the piece to grab if you want a print without committing to a whole new collar and leash.

How far to push the matching

A full set, collar and leash and bandana in one print, reads well in photos and makes sense if you are already replacing a worn out collar anyway. For everyday walks, a lot of people just add one accent piece, usually the bow or the bandana, on top of a collar they already like. There is no wrong answer here. We run one red car and one tester dog around here, so we are not going to pretend we have a strong opinion about coordinating fashion, but a bandana that matches the bow does look nice for a car show trip or a group photo at the trailhead.
