Beach Day With Your Dog: What to Check, Pack and Bring

A good beach day with your dog comes down to a few plain decisions made before you leave the driveway: whether the beach takes dogs, what time you get there, and what is in the bag. The rest is sand and a lot of walking.

We make freeze-dried treats in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and we carry a bag of them to most things, the beach included. This page is the practical version of the day, in the order it happens. It names no beach, because the rules change from one stretch of sand to the next.

Check the rules first

Beaches differ on dogs. Some allow them all year, some only in the off season, some only in certain hours, and some not at all. Look up the specific beach before you pack. Our New Jersey and Delaware dog-friendly beaches guide is the list we keep for the two states closest to us, with the details that matter for each stop.

Check the leash rule at the same time. Posted signs at the entrance beat anything you read online, so read them on the way in.

Go early or go late

Early morning and late afternoon are the usual quiet stretches at a beach, with more room to walk. That can also mean parking closer, which matters when your hands are full. If the beach limits dog hours, check them before you pick a time.

Leash or recall

Off-leash time on a beach is a privilege, not a default. The American Kennel Club writes: "Before going to the beach, your dog should have a reliable recall." If you are not sure yours has one, the answer is a leash.

A long line is a fair middle ground where the rules allow it. Your dog gets room to move and you keep the other end.

Sand and seaweed

Dogs pick things up with their mouths, and a beach is full of things to pick up. The American Kennel Club puts it this way: "But don't let your dog eat the seaweed or sand, both of which are dangerous for dogs to consume." Walk around the tangled wrack line instead of through it.

Water, shade and the waves

Bring a beach umbrella if you have one, so there is a spot to sit that is not in the open. Bring more fresh water than you think you need, plus a bowl that folds flat. The ASPCA says: "Give pets plenty of fresh, clean water when it's hot or humid outdoors as pets can get dehydrated quickly."

When the dog heads for the surf, you go with it. The American Kennel Club writes: "Remember, even experienced dogs need constant supervision while they're in the water."

A toy that floats

Fetch fits a beach. The SodaPup Glitter Ball is a single soft rubber ball, about 2.5 inches across, hollow in the center, and the listing says it floats. It comes in blue glitter, pink glitter, green glitter or glow in the dark glitter. It weighs 2.6 ounces and is sized for dogs 30 to 65 pounds. The listing says you can fill the hollow center with small kibble. SodaPup rates it for gentle to moderate chewers and adds a note to supervise play and size up for strong chewers.

This is a partner item. SodaPup/True Dogs, LLC items are sold and shipped by SodaPup/True Dogs, LLC through Shopify Collective, not made or shipped by Sniff and Shift. You can read the full listing on the Glitter Ball page.

The rinse and the ride home

The ASPCA advises: "Rinse your dog off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt from their fur." A jug of fresh water in the car does the job if the beach has no rinse station.

Then plan the back seat. An old towel does most of the work, and a seat cover keeps sand off the upholstery. Sand gets into everything, so shake the towel out before you load it. Our page on dogs in hot cars is worth reading before you plan a stop on the way home.

Bags and treats for the beach bag

Clean up is part of the day. The Tire Stack Poop Bag Holder is a Sniff and Shift original, designed in house and 3D-printed one at a time in Malvern. It clips to a leash with a steel screw-lock cable, feeds bags through a slot in the side, and comes with a roll of strawberry-scented bags. It is refillable with any standard roll. The listing is plain about it: it is gear, not a chew toy. Here is the Tire Stack.

For rewards, pick treats that ride in a bag. Our freeze-dried beef heart is a single-ingredient treat. The texture is firm and it snaps into small pieces for rapid rewards, milder than liver. Our freeze-dried cheddar bites are small and crunchy. Freeze-drying makes the cheese non-greasy, and no refrigeration is needed once dried, so it travels clean in a pouch or a car. They contain dairy, so they are not suited to dogs with dairy sensitivities. Reseal either bag after opening and store it cool and dry. If your dog is on a special diet or has never had these foods, ask your veterinarian first.

Questions

How do I know if a beach allows dogs?

Look up the beach before you go and read the signs at the entrance. Rules vary by beach, by season and by time of day, and the posted sign is the one that counts.

What is the best time to take a dog to the beach?

Early morning and late afternoon are usually the quieter times, with fewer crowds and easier parking. Some beaches restrict dog hours, so check those first.

Can my dog be off leash at the beach?

Only where the beach allows it, and only if your dog comes when called. If you are unsure about either, keep the leash on or use a long line.

Does the Glitter Ball float?

The listing says it does. It is a hollow rubber ball about 2.5 inches across, sized for dogs 30 to 65 pounds.

Which treats work in a beach bag?

Freeze-dried cheddar needs no refrigeration once dried, and freeze-dried beef heart snaps into small pieces for rapid rewards. Both bags reseal, and the cheddar contains dairy.

What do I do after the beach?

Rinse your dog with fresh water, towel off, and put a seat cover on the back seat before you load up. Shake the sand out of the towel first.
