Collection: Dog Training Treats

Dog training treats have one job: get noticed fast and disappear fast, so the next repetition can start. Everything on this page is a single ingredient treat from our kitchen in Malvern, Pennsylvania, freeze-dried in small batches, and every one of them breaks into pieces small enough to pay out sixty times in a session without filling the dog up.

Which training treat for which job

For the reward that has to land, the recall across a field or the stay while a skateboard goes by, reach for freeze-dried beef liver. It is the strongest smelling piece we make, it crumbles under a thumbnail into pea-sized bits, and most dogs rate it above anything else in the pouch. Beef heart is the same idea with a firmer snap and a milder smell, which suits dogs that get too excited on liver. Cheddar bites are the small, crunchy, everyday reward for the easy repetitions, the kind you hand out by the dozen on a walk. Those three are the ones we call high value, and the ones we would pack for a class.

Whole fish works differently. Sardines and sardine heads are a single bigger reward, the jackpot at the end of a good session rather than the running tally during it. Pink salmon, minnows and turkey heart join this page when they are in stock.

How to use them

Break before you train, not during. Crumble a few liver or heart pieces into a pouch so you are not snapping treats with one hand while holding a leash with the other. Keep the pieces tiny for puppies and small dogs; a crumb carries the same message as a chunk. Treats are extras, and a common rule of thumb is to keep them under about ten percent of what the dog eats in a day, so on a heavy training day feed a little less dinner. Keep the bag sealed and dry between sessions; the glovebox is fine, the dashboard in July is not.

If your dog works for a different protein every month, Modified Monthly builds a box around the ones they rate highest. The full freeze-dried lineup, training treats and otherwise, is in freeze-dried treats for dogs, and the liver guide covers how much is enough.
