Dog Hiking Essentials for a Half Day Out

Water is what goes wrong on a dog's first real hike, not distance. Four things cover a half day out: a leash that survives brush, a bowl that folds flat once the dog has drunk, a snack that needs no cooler, and bags for what the dog leaves behind. Anything past that is weight you carry for nothing on a three hour loop.
A half day, not a weekend

Leash, bowl, salmon and pouch, plus bags
None of it is clever. All of it is the version that does not fail two miles in.
The 2 Hounds Design reflective nylon leash comes in 5/8 inch and 1 inch widths across six lengths, made in North Carolina with a sewn fixed handle. The maker also offers a traffic handle version with a second handle near the clip. Take the 1 inch for a dog over about 25 pounds. A wider leash is not stronger in any way you will notice. Wildebeest's Bernal pop up bowl is two Ripstop nylon bowls in one zippered case, holding up to 8 cups between them, in Sky Blue or Black. On a day hike you will use one of the two, which sounds wasteful until the second one becomes the food bowl on the trip where you stay out longer than planned. It folds flat into its zippered case, and Wildebeest describes the set as lightweight and flexible, which is all a side pocket asks of it. Our freeze dried pink salmon is one ingredient, Alaskan pink salmon, in a 1.5 ounce pouch, with crude protein listed at a minimum of 66 percent and about 85.6 kcal per ounce. Pieces break down small, so one piece becomes three when you need to stretch it at a junction. It needs no cooler and does not turn greasy in a warm pocket, which is the whole argument for freeze dried over anything soft on a trail.

What we left out
No dog backpack. A pack on the dog looks right and does nothing useful on a three hour walk, since the only load is a bowl and a snack pouch you are already carrying. Dogs that carry gear earn it on overnights, and a badly fitted pack on a first hike gives you a rub on the shoulders to deal with instead of a good day out.
How the day runs
Water at the car before you start. Offer a drink every forty minutes or so rather than waiting for the dog to look for it, and offer it in shade if there is any. Pay salmon at junctions and at anything that asks the dog to make a decision, like a bridge or a rocky step. Turn around at half your water, not half your time. Back at the car, check between the pads for grit and stones before the dog jumps in, because that is where a limp on Monday starts.
What this replaces
A kitchen bowl, a bottle of water for you only, and treats in a sandwich bag. The folding bowl is the piece that changes the day, since pouring water into your hand wastes most of it and teaches the dog not to bother. How far can my dog actually go?
Further than most people think and less than the internet claims, and it depends on the dog, the heat and the ground. Plan a loop you can shorten, watch for a dog that stops checking in with you, and treat that as the signal to head back.
Do I need a first aid kit?
On a short local loop, probably not.
