Gifts for dog lovers usually go wrong by being gifts for the dog. Your friend is the one opening the box, and if he spends more Saturdays under a hood than at the park, the present that lands is the one aimed at the back seat he has only just started putting a dog on. A car person gets a dog, and about three weeks later notices that the interior he has been keeping to a standard now has hair worked into the seat seams and a nose print on the quarter glass. He is not going to stop bringing the dog. He is going to start looking for a way to do both, and most people solve it badly with a towel.

The hoodie is his, the cover is the car's

The hoodie is unashamedly for him. Midweight brushed fleece on the inside, unisex relaxed cut, sized S through 2XL with the chest running 38 to 40 inches at the small end and 51 to 54 at 2XL. The circle logo goes across the back and the front stays clean, which is the right way round for something worn at seven in the morning with a coffee in one hand. Wash it cold and inside out and the print outlasts the fashion.

The 4Knines rear seat cover is the piece that changes the car. Regular size is 54 inches wide and it comes in black, grey or tan, made in Oklahoma City. 4Knines describes a non-quilted K9-Shield laminate on the seat bottom that it calls waterproof, with a non-slip backing, and notes that the seams themselves are not waterproof. The hammock section closes off the footwell so the dog cannot slide into it, and the cover is cut to keep seat belts and LATCH points reachable. It is a cover, not a crash tested restraint, and nobody should treat it as one.

What this kit is not

It is not a detailing kit. There is no wash, no drying towel and no interior dressing in it, on the grounds that a man with a detailing shelf already owns all three and does not want your opinion on which brand. The wipes are in here because they are the one product that gets used in a parking lot rather than at home, and even that is borderline.

No harness or lead either. Both need a measurement, and a car person has usually already bought a good one. The first weekend with it

Fit the cover before the dog sees it, on a dry car, and drive it once empty so the straps settle. A cover fitted in a rush, with a dog already in the car, stays crooked for its whole life.

Regular is 54 inches wide, which covers most sedans and small SUVs. Measure the bench across the widest point if you can do it without spoiling the surprise. There are larger sizes if the car is a full size truck or a three row SUV.

What size hoodie should I order?

Go by chest measurement rather than by the size he usually buys, since the cut is relaxed. S runs 38 to 40 inches and 2XL runs 51 to 54. If he is between two and wants to layer over a tee, take the larger.

He already has a seat cover. What then?
