Ninety seconds is the usual number. You pack a rubber toy, hand it over, and the dog has it empty before you have finished making coffee. The fix is not a harder toy, it is a wet load frozen solid and three toys in rotation, because the system only works if there is always one in the freezer. This kit is those three toys, the liquid that locks a load in, and the treat that packs into a narrow end.
Why the load matters more than the toy
Dry kibble shaken out of a cavity is a two minute job for almost any dog. The same cavity packed wet and then frozen is a twenty minute one, and nothing about the toy has changed. The can, for packing speed
SodaPup describes the Can Toy as a rubber chew toy and treat dispenser shaped like a soda can, available in four sizes, made of rubber in orange or green. SodaPup says sizes range from 1.7 ounces at small to 14 ounces at extra large, and that you fill the cavity with kibble, peanut butter or wet food and freeze it for a longer session. The reason it is first in the rotation is the opening. A wide straight mouth means you can pack it with a spoon in about twenty seconds, which matters when you are doing three of them at once.
The corn cob, for holding a load in place
SodaPup describes the Corn on the Cob as a corn shaped rubber chew toy and treat dispenser with a textured kernel surface, for dogs of different sizes, made from rubber in yellow. SodaPup says the large size is 4.75 inches tall by 2.5 inches wide, weighs 9 ounces, and is for dogs 30 to 65 pounds. That texture is the reason it is in the rotation. A frozen load keys into a textured surface instead of sliding out as one plug. That is the failure most people have never diagnosed: the toy did not fail, the load came out whole.
The third toy earns its place on leftovers
SodaPup describes the Gear eDispenser as a gear shaped rubber toy with a built in pocket sized to hold a yak chew, bully stick or similar treat once it gets too small to give on its own. SodaPup says it is made from rubber in yellow or black, measures 3 inches in diameter by 2.5 inches tall, weighs 6.6 or 6.1 ounces, and is for dogs 30 to 65 pounds. SodaPup says to tuck the smaller chew into the pocket and let the dog work on both at once. Everyone with a chewer has a jar of stubs they feel bad about throwing out. This is what that jar is for.
What goes inside
Chicken broth is the liquid, and it is doing structural work rather than flavor work. According to The Family Pet, Open Farm's chicken bone broth comes in a 12 ounce pouch, meant as a mealtime topper and a hydration add on for dogs and cats rather than a meal on its own. Pour it in after the solids, never before. Then stand each toy upright in a mug so the load sets at the closed end instead of running out of the opening overnight and welding itself to a freezer shelf. What is not in the kit
No squeaky plush and no single indestructible toy that costs what all three of these do together. One expensive toy is still one toy, and one toy means the dog gets nothing on the day it is in the dishwasher. Sunday loading, in order
- Line up all three on the counter with the openings facing up.
- Pack the solids first, cheddar bites into the narrow ends, pressed down with the back of a spoon.
- Pour broth in slowly until it reaches the rim, tilting to let the air out.
- Stand each one in a mug so nothing leaks, then freeze overnight.
- One a day. The empty one goes in the dishwasher the same evening and gets reloaded the next.
Take any rubber toy away once the dog can bite pieces off it. Frozen rubber is harder than rubber at room temperature, so a toy that is borderline for your dog is more so straight out of the freezer.
What it replaces
A drawer of single use chews and the daily decision about what to give the dog. Three toys loaded on a Sunday is a week covered, and the only recurring cost is what goes inside them.
Questions
What do I put in if I have no broth
Water works. It sets harder and tastes of nothing, which some dogs mind and some do not, so it is worth trying once before you decide the broth is a luxury.
How long does a frozen load really last
Fifteen to twenty five minutes for most adult dogs, against two or three for the same toy packed dry. The difference is entirely the freezing.
Which size for a 20 pound dog
Look at the sizes on each listing rather than the biggest one you can afford. SodaPup sizes the corn cob's large and the Gear for dogs 30 to 65 pounds, so a smaller dog wants the smaller Can Toy and one of the other two dropped.
