Eight hours alone is not one long stretch to a dog, it is a series of moments where he wonders what to do next. One big toy does nothing for that. Three separate activities do, spread across the morning and into the afternoon: a lick mat that goes down as you leave, a rubber dispenser he can come back to, and a slow feeder that turns the next meal into ten minutes instead of one.
Spacing matters more than the toy does
Most people load one thing, hand it over at the door and hope. The dog clears it, then has the rest of the day. What works better is staggering: something at the moment you leave, something he finds again mid morning, and a meal that takes work. Before anything else, an honest note. SodaPup asks you to supervise play with all three of these, and a dog who destroys rubber should not have the can toy while the house is empty. If that is your dog, this is a kit for the hour you are getting ready rather than the hours you are gone.
What each of the three does with a day
The Bones eMat is the one that goes down at the door. It is TPE, about 8 by 8 inches, with a raised bone themed pattern, in purple or red. Spread peanut butter, yogurt, wet food or a pureed treat into the pattern and let him clean it, or freeze it beforehand for a longer session. It takes the freezer and the top rack of the dishwasher. If your dog works slowly, offer the topper at room temperature instead of frozen solid, since a rock hard mat for a deliberate licker is a short session that ends in a shrug.
The Can Toy is the mid morning find. Rubber, shaped like a soda can, in orange or green, and it runs four sizes from 1.7 ounces at Small to 14 ounces at Extra Large. SodaPup rates it for average chewers, which is the specific reason it is in this kit rather than one of the harder line: an adult dog working steadily at something does not need a toy built for a dog who destroys things. Fill the cavity with kibble, peanut butter or wet food, and freeze it if you want it to last. It goes in the dishwasher afterward.
The Flower eBowl is the meal. TPE again, roughly 8 by 8 by 2 inches deep, with a petal ridge maze, and it holds 4 cups. It is the deep one rather than a shallow tray, so a dog has to work around each ridge rather than sweep across a surface. The cheddar bites are ours, one ingredient, freeze dried in small batches in Malvern, in a single 8 ounce bag. They are the connective tissue here. Crumbled with a little water they go into the bone pattern, and dropped whole they sit in the can toy where a dog has to work them out. Cheddar is dairy, so a dog who does not do well with dairy wants one of our meat bags instead.
What a home alone list usually adds
No treat camera. They are genuinely fun and they solve a human problem, which is wanting to check in, rather than the dog's problem, which is the other seven hours. If you want one, buy it separately and know what it is for. We also left out the extreme chewer rubber line. Sizing up in durability sounds like the cautious choice and it is the wrong one for a dog who chews at an average pace, because a toy too hard for the dog is a toy he stops bothering with by the second week.
Setting up the morning
Load the mat the night before and put it in the freezer, unless your dog is the slow licker described above. One less thing to do at seven in the morning is the difference between a routine that lasts and one that quietly stops after two weeks.
Put the can toy somewhere he does not see you leave it. Under a chair, behind a door, in the spot he checks anyway. Finding it later in the morning is the whole point of it being the second activity.
Save the slow feeder for the evening meal rather than breakfast. A meal that takes ten minutes lands better at the end of a quiet day than at the start of one.
Wash all three the same evening. Two go in the dishwasher outright and the mat takes the top rack, which makes this the rare enrichment routine that does not create a pile of things to scrub.
What owning it replaces
The radio left on. A rawhide you would rather not leave unattended anyway. And the bowl of kibble that is gone in forty seconds at six in the evening, taking the most interesting part of the day with it. Can I leave the can toy with my dog all day?
SodaPup's instruction is to supervise play and to size up for strong chewers, and we are not going to tell you otherwise. The practical version most owners land on is that a steady, average chewer gets it unattended and a dog who takes pieces off rubber does not.
Is one lick mat session enough for a workday?
No, which is exactly why there are three items here rather than one. A frozen mat is a chunk of the first hour, not a chunk of the day, and the other two exist to cover ground it cannot.
Which size can toy for a 60 pound dog?
The four sizes are listed by the toy's own weight, 1.7 ounces at Small through 14 ounces at Extra Large, rather than by the dog's. Compare one against a rubber toy he already owns. A toy that disappears into a dog's mouth is the one to avoid.
