This is the box a new owner opens on their kitchen counter about an hour after they get home, while the puppy is asleep on somebody's foot and nobody wants to go out again. A breeder or a shelter putting one together is solving a specific problem: the first evening, not the first month. So the contents are a harness that comes with its own matched lead, one thing to load and put down, a small bag to start marker work with, a bandana for the photograph, and the bags nobody remembers to buy.
What goes wrong on the first evening
The new owner has a crate and a bag of food and nothing else, because the shopping happened three weeks ago when they were thinking about beds rather than about eight o'clock on a Tuesday. They need a way to take the puppy outside, something to occupy it for fifteen minutes, and something small enough to hand over twenty times in a row. That is the entire brief. One purchase, not two, for the walking end
A go home pack should not ask a new owner to match a lead to a harness they have never seen. EcoBark describes this as the custom fit harness and leash combo in red stripe, a matched harness and 5 ft leash set sized for dogs from XS to XX-Large. EcoBark says the harness has adjustable straps at the neck and chest with a quick release buckle and a back D-ring, and that the leash has a padded handle and a metal clasp, in six sizes. Six sizes on one listing means you can pick the size at the point the puppy actually leaves, rather than guessing at eight weeks from a photograph. A flat disc travels better than a ball
SodaPup describes the Air eCoin as a flat nylon disc with a hot air balloon pattern and treat holding grooves on both faces, sized for dogs and cats of all sizes. SodaPup says it is made from nylon, is 5 inches in diameter and comes in blue, and that you spread peanut butter, yogurt, wet food or cream cheese into the grooves on either face, or freeze it first for a longer session. Flat is the right shape for a go home pack. It does not roll under a car seat on the drive home, and because SodaPup lists grooves on both faces there is a load available on each side. The bag that starts the training the same night
Cheddar bites are in here so the new owner can begin marker work on day one rather than in week three. One ingredient, cheddar cheese, freeze-dried in small batches in Malvern, in an eight ounce bag. Eight ounces of freeze-dried cheese breaks into a very large number of pieces, which is what you want for a puppy that needs a hundred tiny rewards and not five big ones. The photograph, and the thing nobody buys in advance
Every new owner takes a picture within about four hours, and it usually happens on a bare floor with a puppy that has nothing on it. What we deliberately did not include
No food and no crate. Food is the breeder's call and it usually goes home in a separate bag with its own instructions, and a crate is measured to the dog and to the house. There is also no toy in the traditional sense. A puppy going into a new home does not need another new object to be excited about; it needs one thing to lick and one person to follow. Putting a pack together for a litter
- Pick the harness size at the last possible moment, using the puppy's weight on the day rather than the breed average.
- Load the eCoin before the new owner arrives and keep it in your own freezer, so it goes home ready.
- Split the cheddar bag into small labeled pouches if you are sending several puppies out the same weekend.
- Put the bandana on the puppy for the handover photograph, not in the box.
- Write the three things you want them to do in the first week on a card and put it on top. They will read that before they read anything else.
Size the harness to the puppy at go home, not to the dog it will become. A loose harness on an eight week old is an escape waiting for the first time something startles it in a parking lot.
What it replaces
A printed list of things the new owner is supposed to go and buy, which about half of them will do in the first week. Handing over the objects themselves means the puppy has a lead that fits and something to do on the first evening, and that first evening is the one that sets the tone for the next month.

Can a shelter use the same pack for an adult dog

How many of these should a breeder keep on hand
One per puppy in the litter, assembled a week before go home day. The only item worth buying deeper than that is the treat bag, since it keeps.
