Take the mats out of the car. Everything that follows depends on that one instruction, because a rubber mat cleaned in the footwell just moves grime onto the carpet underneath and leaves water where it cannot dry. Out on the driveway, a rubber floor mat cleaner is a three step job: a real degreaser, a lighter cleaner for the footwell you have just exposed, and a thin dressing to put the black back without making the mat slick. Gray mats are not dirty mats
All weather mats go gray for two reasons at once. Road salt, brake dust and shoe grit sit in the tread and dull the surface. Underneath that, the plasticizer that kept the rubber dark has been pulled out by sun, heat and whatever cleaner was used last. Scrubbing fixes the first half. Only a dressing fixes the second, which is why a mat that came back gray after washing did not need more scrubbing.
The three products and what each is doing
3D Orange Degreaser is the gallon that does the actual cleaning. 3D describes it as using limonene oils, the terpenes extracted from orange, lime and grapefruit peel, in a water base rather than a petroleum solvent base, and lists it as a general purpose cleaner for interior and exterior work. It is a concentrate. Mix it per the label, and mix it weaker than you think for a first pass, because you can always go again.
P&S Mud Buster is the pint you use on the footwell while the mats are off drying. Carpet, the plastic sill, the seat rail covers. P&S says it clings to the surface it lands on so it can penetrate the deposits instead of running straight off, which is what you want on a sill you cannot flood with water. Drop it if the footwell under the mats is genuinely clean, which happens in cars where the mats were fitted from new.
P&S Shape-Up is the dressing, and the gallon is a lot of it. P&S describes it as conditioning, softening, preserving and protecting all leather, vinyl or rubber surfaces, and as a water based silicone dressing suitable for every dressing application. Apply it on an applicator pad rather than spraying the mat, then wipe it back. A mat you can see your reflection in is a mat your foot will slide off at a junction.
The product that is missing here
No carpet shampoo and no fabric brush. This page is about rubber and the footwell under it, and a carpet mat is a completely different chemistry. Lists for this search often blur the two, which is how people end up putting a degreaser on a cloth mat and watching the backing let go.

The driveway sequence
Mats out, laid flat, hosed down to knock the loose grit off. Degreaser on, left to dwell for a minute or two but never until it dries. Scrub with a stiff brush, working across the tread rather than along it. Rinse hard, then stand the mats on edge against a wall so water runs off rather than pooling.
Do the footwell while they drip. Mud Buster on the carpet and the sill, agitated with a brush, blotted with a towel. By the time the footwell is done the mats are close to dry, and only then does the dressing go on. Put a wet mat back over dry carpet and you have made a damp car that takes a week to sort out.
Stand the mats on edge in the shade to finish drying rather than flat on the grass. Laid flat they trap water underneath and go back into the car damp on the side you cannot see.
What this replaces
People replace all weather mats when the mats are fine. A set for a mid size SUV costs more than these three products, and two of the three carry on working elsewhere: the degreaser does wheel wells and the garage floor, and the dressing does door seals and the plastic under the hood. Only the cleaner is specific to this job.
Questions we get
Will the dressing make the mats slippery?
It will if you put it on thick and leave it. Applied on a pad and wiped back, it darkens without leaving a film. Do the driver mat last and check it with your hand before you drive.
Can I use the same degreaser on a cargo liner?
Yes, and it is the better place to be aggressive because nobody stands on a cargo liner. Take it out of the car like the mats.
How often is this worth doing?
Twice a year for most people, and once more after a salted winter. The dressing needs topping up more often than the deep clean does.
