The Air eCoin is a flat nylon disc, 5 inches across, blue, with treat-holding grooves on both faces. Most lick mats are silicone or rubber, and a small dog that decides to chew one instead of lick it will take a corner off. Nylon does not give the same way. It also goes on the top rack of the dishwasher, which matters more than it sounds when you are spreading something soft into it four evenings a week. What we left out
No squeaky plush. Half the small dog kits online lead with one, and in an apartment a squeaker is a noise complaint waiting to happen, not enrichment. There is also no rawhide here and no hard bone. A dog under 25 pounds working a bone for an hour on a bare floor is loud, and the kit already has two textures that do the same job.
The first week
Set the lick mat out at the same time each evening, loaded and frozen from the night before. Give the Can Toy in the mornings, unfrozen, so the two are not competing. By day four most dogs have sorted out which one they prefer, and you can stop alternating and just lean on the winner. Keep the pouch packed by the door with bags already loaded so a walk never gets delayed by hunting for one.
Supervise chewing and lick mat sessions. Pick up either toy once it is worn enough that a piece could come off in a mouth.
What it replaces
Two toys and a pouch, instead of a drawer of plush that lasts a week each and a pocket full of loose bags. Questions we get
Will a lick mat actually hold a small dog's interest?
Frozen, yes. Room temperature, often not. The freezer is what turns a two minute activity into a twenty minute one, and it is the single biggest difference between owners who love lick mats and owners who gave up on them.
My dog is 8 pounds. Is the Small Can Toy still too big?
It is the right call at 8 pounds. The Small is 1.7 ounces, which a toy breed can move around the floor without effort, and going smaller than that starts raising the question of whether the toy fits entirely in the mouth.
Can I put the cheddar bites in the lick mat?
Yes, though they work better crushed and mixed into something soft than pressed in whole. Whole bites sit in the grooves and come out in three licks.
