Steering wheel, gear shifter, door pulls, window switches, the stalk behind the wheel. Those five places take every bit of hand oil, sunscreen, coffee and road food that comes into the car, and they are the only surfaces you touch on every single drive. The shine on a well used wheel is that residue, buffed smooth by your own palms. Clean it off, put the right thing back on leather, and keep a canister in the door for the weeks in between.
Why the rim goes slick
Body oil soaks into the top layer of leather or polyurethane, and then the constant friction of your grip polishes it flat. A urethane wheel ends up looking wet and feeling slippery. A leather one goes dark at three and nine, then dries out underneath the film because the oils you are adding are not the ones leather actually wants. Neither state gets better on its own. What each bottle handles
Cockpit is the cleaner and it is the one that does the real work here. P&S developed it for rubber, plastic, vinyl and leather, and says it cleans without drying, discoloring or damaging the surface being cleaned. Spray it onto a microfiber towel folded into quarters, not onto the wheel, because overspray on a touchscreen or an instrument cluster is its own afternoon. Work a section of rim at a time and turn the towel often. When the towel stops coming up gray you are finished, and that usually takes two or three passes on a wheel nobody has cleaned in years.
Leather Treatment is the second step, and only if the wheel is actually leather. P&S describes the problem in plain terms, that due to normal use seats over time become dry and lose their natural luster, and calls this the ideal product for reconditioning lifeless weathered automotive leather seats. A wheel is the hardest worked piece of hide in the car. Use a thin amount, work it in with your fingertips, then buff the surface back with a dry towel so nothing is left sitting on top. P&S also notes it infuses interiors with an intense scent that lasts, so use less than you think on a hot day.
The wipes are the maintenance habit. A canister holds a hundred and fifty pre moistened sheets from the P&S Double Black collection, developed for leather, vinyl and plastic, and P&S states they clean without drying, discoloring or damaging the surface and leave it feeling residue free. Keep them in the driver's door bin. One sheet on the door pulls and the shifter on a Sunday keeps the ten minute job from ever becoming a two hour one. Skip them if you already keep a spray bottle and towels in the trunk and you actually use them.
What never goes on a wheel
Dressing. Any of it, including the interior protectant offered alongside this kit, which belongs on the dash top and nowhere near your hands. A dressed wheel looks superb for about a day, and after that your hands slide on the rim every time you turn it. We left a dressing out of this kit for that reason, even though every interior list you will find includes one. Surface compatibility for these bottles beyond what P&S names is not stated by the maker, so if your wheel is wrapped in alcantara or suede, stop here and look up something specific to it. Ten minutes, once a month
Park in shade and open both front doors. Hot plastic dries the cleaner before it can lift anything, and you will be wiping product instead of grime.
- Wheel first, in quarters, rotating it toward you as you go.
- Shifter and the console around it, then the parking brake handle if you have one.
- Door pulls, the armrest top and the window switch panel, which collects more than anything except the wheel.
- Stalks, then the volume knob and whatever else your hand lands on without looking.
- Leather conditioner last, on the rim only, then buff it dry.
The lower door cards on the passenger side collect more than anybody expects, from shoes, bags and whoever leans on them getting in. Wipe those while the doors are already open rather than making a second job of it.
What the canister replaces
One pint of cleaner and a canister of wipes cover the touch points for a year or more, against buying a new pack of supermarket wipes every few months that leave a shine you then have to clean off. Questions
Why is my steering wheel sticky rather than shiny
Sticky usually means a previous owner used a dressing or a protectant on it, and it has never fully come off. It takes several passes with a proper interior cleaner and a fresh towel each time.
Can I use the same cleaner on the screen
No. Touchscreens have their own coatings and most makers are specific about what goes on them, so use a plain damp microfiber and leave the chemistry for everything else.
Does a leather wheel need conditioning as often as the seats
More often. Seats get sat on through clothing, while a wheel is skin against hide for every mile you drive, so it dries out faster and shows it sooner.
