Horse Shoe Feed & Supply is at 819 Pughtown Road in Spring City, out on the Chester Springs and Kimberton side of the delivery zone where the ZIP codes stop being suburban. It calls itself a neighborhood feed, supply and garden center, and that is a fair description of the building.
The store
It was opened by Bryan and Brittany, who describe themselves as first-generation farmers. Their account of how it happened is straightforward. They started with a large garden while living in Lancaster and working full-time jobs, sold the surplus at farmers markets, bought laying hens, and grew that into Horse Shoe Ranch, which now sells pastured eggs and grass-fed beef across Pennsylvania and New York. The store came afterwards. In their own words: "When we started farming, there wasn't really a place to walk in and ask questions, so we built the store we would've shopped at."
What they carry
Five departments: garden supply, wild birds, horse and livestock, pets, and farm and homestead. The pet side is dog and cat food and the practical end of pet supply rather than boutique accessories. The stocking policy is unusually specific for a feed store, because the owners say they only carry what they use themselves on the farm, and put it like this: "What's on our shelves is only the stuff that made the cut." If you keep chickens or horses as well as a dog, that is one stop instead of three, and the counter is staffed by people who have used the product rather than read the label.
Hours, parking and getting in
Here is the one thing to check. The store's own story page lists Monday to Saturday 9am to 5pm and Sunday 10am to 3pm, while the homepage banner shortens that to Monday to Sunday, 9 to 5. The two do not agree. Call 610-469-9238 before driving out if you are coming any distance, because this is not a shop you pass on the way to somewhere else. Pughtown Road is rural, well outside any borough grid, and the drive is the reason to confirm first.
Nearby
our dog-friendly adventure map does not have a Spring City entry yet. The closest listings are over in Phoenixville, where Black Rock Sanctuary and the Schuylkill River Trail are both a short drive east.
