Teaching a Dog to Stop Barking on Cue: Kit

The barking starts before the knock finishes. By the time you have crossed the room the dog is already three minutes into it, and a quiet cue shouted over the top of that is a word the dog has never heard in a state it cannot think in. This kit builds the other half of the picture: a mat a few feet back from the door, a short leash for the drills, and two tiers of reward for holding the spot while the door does something interesting.
Why the mat comes before the cue
A dog cannot do nothing. Asking for quiet without giving the dog a job is asking it to invent one, which is why the method in our guide to teaching a quiet cue starts with a place to be. The gear here exists so you can run those drills twenty times on a Tuesday afternoon with nobody actually at the door.
A mat, two ways to hold the dog to it and two treats
The Crate Pads Armor from American Dog is the spot. American Dog designed it specifically for scratchers, diggers and chewers, with a 1680D ballistic nylon outer cover that is removable, machine washable and quick dry, over a 420D inner liner with poly fiber filling. YKK zippers and a hidden closure keep the seams out of reach, and corner ties stop a dog dragging it across the floor mid drill. It comes in sizes from 22 inches up to 48, in Black, Camel, Olive, Charcoal or Midnight. Pick the size the dog can lie down on fully, then put it where the dog can see the door but cannot reach it in one bound. Skip it if your dog already has a bed it will stay on, since the Armor build is aimed at dogs that dig at their bedding. The 2 Hounds Design double connection leash is what you hold during practice knocks. It clips to the front and back of a Freedom harness at the same time, and 2 Hounds Design describes the Training Leash as 3 feet when connected at two points or 5 feet at one. On the flat collar in this kit that is the 5 foot setting, so gather the slack and work at the length that lets the dog reach the mat and nothing else. The flat buckle collar, also from 2 Hounds Design and also made in North Carolina, comes in 5/8 inch and 1 inch widths, sized XSmall up to XXLarge at 26 to 34 inches. 2 Hounds Design says to measure the neck and choose the smallest size that still fits. Keeping a plain collar on for door drills is useful because most dogs read a harness coming out as a walk starting, and a walk is the one thing you do not want the door to predict right now.
Our freeze dried cheddar cheese bites pay the ordinary repetitions, one ingredient in an 8 ounce bag at roughly 153.7 kcal per ounce. You will use a lot of them, since every knock that does not produce a bark gets paid on the mat. Scallops are the other tier, one ingredient in a 2 ounce bag with crude protein listed at a minimum of 68 percent, and they come out the first time a real person walks through the door and the dog stays put.
What we left out
No anti bark collar, of any kind. Suppressing the noise does nothing about the arousal underneath it, and a dog that has been punished for announcing a visitor often stops announcing and keeps the rest. We also left out a doorbell disabler, which sounds clever and takes away the exact thing you need to practice against.
The drill
Knock on your own door. That is the whole starting point, and most people skip it. Walk the dog to the mat, ask for a down, then knock softly on the wall beside the door and pay cheddar for four paws staying put. Work up in steps: a harder knock, the handle turning, the door open two inches, the door wide with nobody there. A helper texting you from the porch is the next stage, and a helper walking in is where the scallops appear. Ten repetitions a session, twice a day, and stop while the dog is still getting it right rather than pushing for the version that fails.
What this replaces
A crate in another room and a lot of apologizing to guests. The mat is doing the work a crate used to do, with the difference that the dog is learning something instead of being removed from the situation. Two reward tiers also replace the usual pattern of running out of good treats halfway through the hardest repetition of the week.
Questions
Door work brings up a few practical things once people start running drills.
How far from the door should the mat go?
Far enough that the dog cannot touch anyone coming in, close enough that it can still see what is happening. For most hallways that is six to eight feet, and off to the side rather than straight down the approach.
My dog barks the second the mail arrives, not just at guests. Same drill?
Same drill, different trigger. Practice with whatever sound actually sets the dog off, including a recording of your own doorbell played quietly, and build up the volume rather than starting at full strength.
Do I need the second leash?
Not to start. A spare 2 Hounds Design nylon leash is worth having once drills are a daily habit, mostly so a leash in the wash never cancels a session.
