Car Show Dog Training: What to Bring on the Day

Car show dog training comes down to one skill, and it is not a trick. It is standing still on a lead for four hours, six feet from paint that belongs to somebody else, while strangers reach down without asking. The gear that makes that possible is short. A harness the dog cannot surge out of, a lead that means something in a crowd, water you did not have to carry separately, and a reward worth turning away from a hot dog cart for.

Four hours beside somebody else's paint
A show lot is a strange environment for a dog and people underestimate it. Engines turn over without warning, the ground is hot, food is at nose height on every second table, and a steady stream of people lean in to say hello. A dog that walks beautifully round the block can come apart in that, not because it is badly trained but because none of its training happened anywhere like it.
This kit does not teach the dog to cope. It gives you the handling equipment to manage the day while the training catches up, which is a different and more honest claim. If your dog has never been around engine noise, start at home rather than in a lot full of people.
The harness, the lead, the bottle and the liver
The Freedom No-Pull harness from 2 Hounds Design is the piece doing the real work. It is made in North Carolina with a clip on the front and one on the back, and 2 Hounds Design describes a patented control loop across the back that tightens gently to discourage pulling. The chest strap is lined with Swiss velvet and the hardware is stainless steel, which matters for a harness that is going to live in a trunk. It comes in 5/8 inch and 1 inch widths. 2 Hounds Design says to measure around the largest part of the chest, right behind the front legs, and take the smallest size that still fits.
The matching nylon lead is deliberately unexciting. 2 Hounds Design makes it in North Carolina with a sewn fixed handle, in the same two widths, and offers a traffic handle version with a second handle down near the clip. That second handle is the one worth thinking about for a show: it lets you shorten the dog to your leg in one movement when somebody backs a car out, without hauling on the harness.
The Rubyloo bottle solves a problem most people solve badly with a cupped hand. It is food-grade stainless steel with double-wall copper vacuum insulation, and the 8 ounce dog bowl detaches from the base and sits under a leak-proof chug lid, so one bottle covers both of you. The twist-off base doubles as storage, and Rubyloo sizes the bottle to fit car cup holders wider than 3.6 inches. There are nine color and graphic options, which is nine more than anyone needs and pleasant anyway.
Freeze-dried beef liver is the currency and the 1.5 ounce bag is the right size for a day out rather than a training block. One ingredient, beef liver, freeze-dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. It has to outbid a dropped chip and a stranger's sandwich, which is a higher bar than a sit in the kitchen, and nothing milder manages it. Break it small and pay often rather than saving it for one big moment.

The mat this kit does not include
There is no settle mat in here and that is the honest gap. A mat is arguably the single most useful thing for a dog at a show, because it gives the animal a defined place to be that is not simply the end of a lead. We left it out because a mat only works once the dog has been taught to use one, and buying a mat before that training is buying a rug.
No ear protection either. It gets suggested a lot for show dogs, and we do not sell it. The towel is the one piece here that rides as an add-on rather than a core item: 3D's gray HYDRO-FIL is 20 by 24 inches in an 80 percent polyester and 20 percent polyamide blend, and 3D rates it at about two gallons of absorbency. How the first show morning runs
Harness on at home, not in the lot. A dog that has its first experience of a new harness in a crowded field has two new things to deal with instead of one.
Arrive early, before the lot fills, and walk the perimeter once with the dog on the traffic handle so it sees the shape of the place while it is still quiet. Water before the dog asks. Then pick your spot, and pay the dog for staying in it, generously and often for the first hour.
Leave before the dog is done rather than after. The mistake almost everyone makes is staying for the trophies, and a dog that finished the day badly remembers the day badly. Two good hours beat five hard ones, and next month you get to build on a good memory instead of repairing a bad one.
Where the money goes
Mostly into the harness, which is the only item here that will still be in use in three years. The lead and the bottle are durable but replaceable, the liver is consumed, and the bags are pennies. Against that, the harness replaces the collar-and-hope approach that produces a dog dragging you between rows of cars, which is the actual risk in a lot full of other people's property.

Which harness width should I pick?
The 5/8 inch for dogs under about forty pounds and the 1 inch above that, and size by the chest measurement rather than by breed. 2 Hounds Design is specific about taking the smallest size that still fits, which is counterintuitive if you are used to buying collars with room to grow.
What about the ground temperature?
Tarmac in a lot in July is hotter than the air, so check the pads after the day and plan around the middle hours. Water more often than feels necessary. The detachable bowl exists so you have no excuse not to.
How do I handle people reaching for the dog?
Step between them and the dog and say the dog is working, which nobody argues with. Then pay the dog for having stayed still while it happened. Every time you let a stranger loom over a dog that has not consented to it, you spend a little of the credit you built.
