A dog and a cat in the same house usually turns into two shopping lists, two cabinets and four bags going stale at different rates. Everything in this kit sits on our hybrid line, which means the label already says dog and cat, and the same bag goes to either animal. Three bags and one mat, and nobody has to remember whose is whose.
The two cabinet problem
Most people end up here after buying a cat treat the dog stole and a dog treat the cat ignored. The fix is not a bigger cabinet. It is picking proteins that both animals take, which in practice means fish and shellfish rather than beef or poultry, and buying one bag instead of two smaller ones. What each bag is doing here
Captain's Catch is the bag that solves the whole problem on its own. It is our freeze-dried seafood medley, made in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and the ingredient line is squid, octopus, shrimp, clam and mussel. Five sea creatures, nothing else. It comes in one bag size, so there is no size decision to get wrong, and the pieces are irregular enough that a cat gets a whole one while a dog gets three at a time.
Blue-lipped mussels are the small one. Single ingredient, and the pieces come out of the bag at roughly the size a cat will take from a flat palm, which also happens to be the size you want for a dog doing recall reps in the yard. If your cat is suspicious of anything new, this is the bag to open first, because the smell arrives before the treat does.
Pink salmon is the mild option, and it exists for the animal that turns its head away from shellfish. The only ingredient is Alaskan pink salmon. Skip it if both animals already eat the mussels, since three open bags in a two animal house is one more than anyone keeps track of. The Camp eMat is the optional piece, and it is the only thing here that is not ours. SodaPup describes the Camp eMat as a lick mat with a retro van and camping design, sized for dogs and cats, made from TPE at about 8 by 8 inches, with suction cups that stick to tile, glass or vehicle windows. Those suction cups are why one mat covers both animals. Press it to the floor for the dog, then press it to a countertop or the side of the tub for the cat, and you have two stations out of one object.
What we left out on purpose
There is no separate cat treat in this kit, and most lists under this search have one. We left it out because a cat only bag turns into a dog problem the first time it gets left on a low shelf, and because our own cat treats are already on the hybrid label. There is also only one mat. The first week, in order
Open Captain's Catch first and give both animals two pieces from your hand, in separate rooms. Watch which one takes it faster.
- Day one, Captain's Catch by hand, one animal at a time.
- Day two, mussels for whichever animal was slower, since the smaller piece is easier to accept.
- Day three, salmon only if something got refused.
- Day four, load the mat with a soft spread and put it on the floor for the dog while the cat eats somewhere else entirely.
- Day five onward, move the mat to a counter or a window for the cat and keep the dog out of that room.
Feed the two apart. A dog that learns to clear the cat's mat is a habit you spend a month untraining, and it starts with one unsupervised afternoon.
What this replaces
Three bags here stand in for the five or six you would otherwise keep, because none of them are species specific and none of them go stale waiting for the right animal. The mat replaces two mats. Can a cat really eat dog treats
Not all of them, which is the point of the hybrid line. These three are labeled for both species because the ingredient is a single sea protein with nothing added. A beef liver bag is a dog bag, and it stays that way.
Which bag should I open first
Captain's Catch. It has the widest appeal of the three and it tells you quickly whether you have a fussy animal or a greedy one.
Do I need the mat
No. It is the one optional item in the kit. Add it if the two animals eat at the same time in the same room, because it gives you a second station you can move.
