The first time a harness goes over an indoor cat, the cat usually flops onto its side and refuses to walk. That is normal, and it is not a harness problem. The same pay as you go handling work sits behind our muzzle training treat kit, for the dog version of the problem. Cat harness work is treat work, so this kit is one matched harness and lead plus the two strongest smelling things we make, which is what you actually need to get past the flopping stage.
Why the hardware comes as a set
Buying a cat harness and a lead separately means guessing whether a clip meant for a dog lead will sit right on a strap built for a four pound cat. Pink Papyrus sells the Stasia as a harness and matching lead together, so the hardware is already paired. Pink Papyrus describes the Stasia Cat Harness and Leash Set as deep pink, made from breathable fabric with a reflective strip. Pink Papyrus says it adjusts four ways for fit and includes a discreet AirTag pocket, in Small, Medium and Large. Four adjustment points matter more on a cat than on a dog, because a cat that can reverse out of a chest strap will do it exactly once and then live under the porch. What the two bags are for
Freeze-dried raw shrimp is the payment. One ingredient, whole raw shrimp, freeze-dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. It is strong enough to hold a cat still while a strap goes over the shoulders, which is a thirty second job that feels much longer when nothing is holding the cat's attention. Break a piece in half for a small cat and you get two rewards out of one.
Sardine heads are the backup smell. Also single ingredient, also ours, in a two ounce bag. You need a second option because shrimp stops working eventually, usually around day five, and a cat that has decided the harness predicts shrimp and only shrimp will simply stop coming when it sees the shrimp bag. The Camp eMat is the trick that gets a first harness on without a fight. SodaPup describes it as a TPE lick mat sized for dogs and cats, about 8 by 8 inches, carrying a retro van and camping design. SodaPup says the suction cups on the back stick to tile, glass or vehicle windows for hands free baths, travel or grooming. Stick it to the side of the bath at cat shoulder height, spread something soft into the pattern, and buckle the harness while the cat is busy. This is how most people get past the first fitting, and it is worth the extra item.
What is not in here, and why
There is no retractable lead and no carrier. Lists under this search tend to add both. A retractable lead on a cat gives you no way to shorten the line fast, which is the one thing you want outdoors. A carrier is a separate purchase with its own sizing, and buying it in the same order as the harness usually means neither gets measured properly. There is only one harness color in the kit. The Joey set is the alternative in the customize drawer, and Pink Papyrus describes it as luxe teal, made from breathable fabric with a reflective strip and the same four way adjustment.
Three weeks, indoors first
Nobody walks out the front door in week one. The sequence below is slow on purpose, because the failure mode is a cat that associates the harness with being carried outside before it is ready.
- Week one, harness on the floor near the food bowl. Shrimp when the cat touches it.
- Week one, still indoors, drape the harness over the cat's back for two seconds. Shrimp. Remove it.
- Week two, buckle it while the cat works on the loaded mat. Leave it on for a minute, then take it off before the cat asks you to.
- Week two, clip the lead on indoors and let it drag while you sit there. Sardine heads now, not shrimp.
- Week three, carry the cat to a quiet patch of grass, put it down, and let it decide when to move.

What this replaces
One set instead of a harness, a lead and a second lead when the first clip turns out to be too heavy. Two bags of ours instead of a tub of soft treats that goes off in a week. The mat is the only item here that does a second job after the training is done, since it keeps working for meals and grooming long after the cat walks on a lead without noticing.
Questions
What size harness for an average house cat
Measure the chest behind the front legs and read the size chart on the Stasia listing rather than guessing from weight. Two cats at the same weight can be two sizes apart depending on build.
How long until my cat actually walks outside
Three weeks is a normal run for an adult indoor cat, and some never get there. A cat that freezes on grass after four sessions is telling you something, and the harness is still useful indoors for vet trips.
Can I use the same treats for my dog
Yes. Both bags are on our hybrid line and the labels say dog and cat. The shrimp pieces are small enough to work as training rewards for either animal.
