The seat is only half of what a wet dog does to the back of a truck. Claws go down the door card getting in, mud comes off the flank against the panel, and by March the inside of both rear doors looks worse than the bench ever did. This kit covers the bench and the doors with matching material, then adds the two things you actually use on the drive: water and a treat worth paying attention for.
Covering the bench is where most people stop
A dog car seat cover on its own handles the flat surface a dog lies on and nothing else. If your dog loads himself from a tailgate into a cargo area, that is genuinely all you need. If he climbs in through a rear door twice a day, wet, the doors take as much punishment as the seat does and nobody sells you the second half. Skip it if your windows are tinted. The door covers are not recommended for use with tinted windows, and that is a real limit rather than fine print. In that case buy the seat cover alone and keep a towel in the door pocket.
Bench, door cards, water, liver
The 4Knines® hammock cover goes down first. Regular is 54 inches wide, sized for cars, trucks and SUVs, in black, grey or tan. 4Knines describes a non quilted K9 Shield laminate on the seat bottom that it calls waterproof, with a non slip backing, and notes the seams are not watertight. The hammock panel closes the footwell, so a dog who slides at a stop stays on the cover rather than ending up on the carpet. Measure the bench before ordering. Regular covers most trucks and midsize SUVs, and a full size bench wants the XL.
The door covers are the part this kit exists for. They come as a pair, each 24 by 20 inches, in black, grey, tan or camo, and 4Knines makes them from the same quilted colorfast material as its seat covers. 4Knines says to hose them down, wipe them, or put them in the washer, which is the right answer for something that catches a season of mud at shoulder height. Order them in the same size class as the seat cover so the two match rather than running Large door covers against an XL bench.
The Rubyloo bottle is the water answer and the reason there is no cooler in this list. Rubyloo describes it as food grade stainless steel with double wall copper vacuum insulation, an 8 ounce bowl that detaches under a leak proof chug lid, and a body sized for cup holders wider than 3.6 inches. One bottle serves you and the dog at the same stop. Nine color and graphic options, and the sizing is the only thing to check before you order.
Our freeze dried beef liver is the currency. One ingredient, freeze dried in small batches in Malvern, in 1.5, 3 and 6 ounce bags. A dog coming off a morning in the field is not interested in a biscuit, and liver is what still registers. It is lightweight and non greasy, which is why the bag can live in a door pocket in a truck rather than in the house.
The strawberry scented bags are ours as well, leak proof, on an easy tear roll. The stop on the way home is the one nobody plans for and everybody makes.
What a gear list usually adds here
No cargo liner. It is the obvious companion piece and it answers a different question entirely, because a dog in a cargo area is not a dog coming through a rear door. Buying both means covering a surface your dog never touches. We also left out a barrier. Barriers are fitted to a specific vehicle's pillars and headrests, a generic one rattles, and a rattling barrier in a truck is a thing you remove in the first month and never reinstall.
Fitting it and living with it
Fit both covers on a dry day with the dog indoors. Everything is easier to reach without a dog standing exactly where your hands need to be.
Take the door covers off before a wash. They come off faster than they go on, and hosing them separately is simpler than working around them in a bay.
Fill the bottle the night before every field morning. Water at the truck after a run matters more than water on the way out, and a bottle you filled at home is one less stop.
Reseal the liver bag after every stop and keep it out of the sun. Cool and dry is the storage guidance on our own page, and a truck dashboard in July is neither.
What owning it replaces
A moving blanket over the bench, which slides the moment a dog turns around. A rubber floor mat propped against a door card, the usual improvisation, which falls over. And a gallon jug rolling loose in the footwell every time you brake. Questions about covering a back seat
Will a seat cover fit a bench with fold down seats?
Not this version. There is a separate 4Knines cover cut for fold down seats, and using the standard one on a split bench means the section that folds is either uncovered or pinned shut. Check which bench you have before ordering.
Can I leave the covers in permanently?
Most people do. The material is listed as colorfast and washable per the label, so the practical limit is how often you want to pull them for a wash rather than whether they can stay in. The covers are not chew proof, so a dog who chews fabric is the exception.
Do the door covers work on a two door truck?
The pair is sized at 24 by 20 inches each, which suits a standard rear door panel. On a two door cab with larger front doors, measure the panel first, and there is an XL pair listed if yours runs bigger.
