Dog Walker Gear Kit: What to Carry

Five houses in a morning, five dogs you did not raise, and whatever the weather decided to do. A walker's kit has to run hands free, survive being thrown into a footwell between stops, and carry a reward strong enough to matter to a dog that has known you for nine days. This is four pieces and a bowl, put together for the round rather than for one dog.
Who is actually running this round
You walk other people's dogs for money, three to six a day, usually alone. That changes the arithmetic twice over. Nothing can depend on the dog being trained, because somebody else trained it and you inherited the result. Belt, bag, bag holder and liver

What a professional gear list usually adds and we did not
No harness. Every list of walker supplies has one, and it is the wrong call when your dogs range from a beagle to a rottweiler, because you would be buying four of them and still meeting a fifth shape next month. Harnesses stay with the client. If half your round is two dogs at once, that is a different problem with a different answer, and the multi dog leash neutrality kit is where it lives. We also left out the retractable lead. Two dogs on retractables become a single knot at the first corner, and a stairwell version of that is worse.
Setting it up before the first client sees it
Build the whole thing once at home. Set the belt over the jacket you actually wear, not over a shirt, and run both leash lengths short. Walk your own dog with it, or borrow one for twenty minutes. Discovering that the coupler is on the wrong side while a client's labrador is already moving is a bad first impression.
Load the pouch the night before, one portion per dog, and top the bag holder to the lid so you never have to count. Bags are the one item where running out carries an immediate social penalty in front of a neighbor.
Wash the pouch every week. Liver dust plus rain becomes a smell that follows you into a client's hallway, and that is a small thing right up until somebody mentions it.
What owning it replaces
One belt instead of a leash in each hand and a third under your arm. One bag instead of a tote, a pouch and a carrier bag of spares in the trunk. A dispenser that refills instead of a rolling series of disposable ones that crack in cold weather. The treats end up being the only thing you genuinely reorder, which is the right trade, because a bag of liver costs less to replace than a leash clip that has been opened four hundred times.
Questions walkers ask before the first round
Can I use a hands free leash on a dog that pulls?
Not on the first walk. Run the leash in your hand until you know what the dog does about a bike, a squirrel and another dog on a lead, then move it to the belt. An unknown dog attached to your body is how walkers end up on the sidewalk.
How much liver does a five dog day take?
Less than people guess, if you break it down. A piece the size of a pea still registers with most dogs. Buy the size that matches your round rather than the largest bag on the page, since an opened bag in a damp van does not last forever.
Do clients mind you bringing your own treats?
Ask at sign up and get the answer in writing. Some dogs are on a restricted diet, some owners simply want to know what their dog ate. It is a thirty second question that saves an awkward message on a Sunday.
