First Car Ride With a Puppy: What to Pack

A puppy's first ride is usually the drive home from the breeder or the shelter, and he will remember the car long after he has forgotten the day. That ride decides whether the back seat becomes a normal place or a thing to dread. Five items handle it: a cover so the seat survives, water he can actually drink, a bag with the rest of his things in it, a treat small enough to hand over often, and bags for the stop you will be making.
What a puppy learns on the drive home
Nothing about a car makes sense to an eight week old dog. The floor moves, the noise never stops, and he has just left everything he knew. Most of what you can do about that is timing rather than equipment, which is why this kit is four pieces of gear and one bag of cheddar rather than a pile of accessories. Skip it if your puppy is coming home in a carrier on somebody's lap, fifteen minutes door to door, and you already own a seat cover. On a trip that short the gear hardly matters. Who is holding him does.
Cover, water, bag, cheddar
The 4Knines® cover is the piece you want in place before he ever gets in. Why there is no carrier or harness here
Almost every first ride checklist opens with a hard sided carrier. We are not selling you one. The size that fits an eight week old puppy will be useless by Christmas, and the size that fits the grown dog is a box he rattles around inside today. Buy that once, when you know what you have. The same goes for a harness. Chest measurements on a growing puppy move week to week, and a restraint bought to the wrong number is worse than useful.
How to run the first three rides
Put the cover on the day before. Fitting it with a puppy already in the car, in a parking lot, with somebody waiting, is how people end up driving home with a bare seat.
Keep the first ride after the homecoming short. Five minutes to the end of the street and back, then out of the car and into the house with a piece of cheddar for getting out. The point is that the car leads somewhere ordinary, not only to the vet or the shelter.
Reward at stops, not while you are moving. Hand a piece over when the car is in park and he has settled, which means you are paying for the settling rather than for barking at a truck.
Water at every stop for the first few weeks, even when he refuses it. The bowl twists off the bottle in one motion, so the refusal costs you ten seconds and he learns the shape of the routine.
What owning it replaces
A bath towel over the seat, which slides off the first time he stands up. A takeout cup of water balanced on the console. Questions about a puppy's first ride
My puppy drools and whines the whole way. Is that carsickness?
It can be, and it can also just be a new dog in a loud box. Shorter trips, more often, is the usual first answer. If it is still happening a month later, ask your vet rather than buying more gear.
Should the puppy ride in the front or the back?
The back, on the cover, with the hammock up. A puppy in a front footwell is under your feet at the worst possible moment, and the hammock exists precisely so the rear footwell is not an option either.
Regular or XL seat cover?
The Regular is 54 inches wide and the XL is 60. Measure your bench seat before you pick, since 4Knines lists both for cars, trucks and SUVs and the number is the only thing separating them. A cover that gaps at one edge is the failure you are trying to avoid.
