Pup Cup Dog Treats: The Coffee Run Kit

The barista knows your dog's name and hands a little cup of whipped cream out the window every Saturday. That is a nice ritual and an expensive one, and it is also a cup of dairy foam that your dog did not need. This kit keeps the ritual and changes what goes in it: a freeze dried treat that looks the part, a pouch to keep it in, a bandana for the photo, and bags for the patio stop afterward.
The habit is the thing worth keeping
Dogs learn the route. Mine sits up at the turn into the lot whether or not anybody has said a word, and that anticipation is most of what the pup cup is actually delivering. It is not for you if the whole appeal is the window itself. Some dogs are in it for the stranger leaning out with something in their hand, and no bag in your console replaces that.
What goes in the cup, and what carries it
Our Pup-Ornaut Ice Cream is the centerpiece. The full ingredient list is nonfat Greek yogurt, banana and peanut butter made from dry roasted peanuts and sea salt, freeze dried in small batches in Malvern in a single bag size. Freeze dried rather than frozen matters here more than it sounds, because it never melts, so it lives in a glovebox instead of a cooler and it comes out light and crunchy instead of dripping. It does contain peanuts and dairy, so it is not one of our single ingredient bags, and if your dog reacts to either it is not the treat for him.
The Alamo pouch is what keeps the treat within reach of the driver's seat. Wildebeest describes it as having a magnetic snap closure and two separate water resistant compartments, a webbing pull across the top and a daisy chain on the outside, with a detachable waist strap or a heavy duty clip. Six colors. At a drive through window the second compartment earns its place immediately, because a card and a phone go in one side and the treat stays clean in the other.
The bandana is the part of the routine that is not food. American Dog makes these as classic tie ons, knotted around the collar rather than pulled over the head, and offers three prints: Colorado Flag, Texas and Vote Dog. Four sizes run from X Small at 17 inches, which fits collars of 9 to 11 inches, up to Large and XL at 32 inches for collars of 15 to 23 inches. Measure the collar rather than the neck, since the ranges overlap. Every size uses the same tie on knot, so it comes off for a wash or a swap.
Our own strawberry scented bags finish it off. Leak proof, pulled straight off an easy tear roll. A coffee stop with a patio is still a stop, and patios belong to businesses that notice.
Why there is no cup in this kit
You could buy a collapsible silicone cup and serve the treat out of it, and plenty of lists would sell you one. We left it out because the cup is theater for the human, and a dog eating four pieces out of your hand at a red light is getting the same thing faster. We also left out the frozen dairy desserts sold in pet freezers. They are a different product with a cold chain attached, and the entire reason this kit works in a car is that nothing in it needs to stay cold.
Turning it into the Saturday routine
Load the pouch before you leave, not at the window. Take out what you intend to hand over and leave the bag at home, resealed, which is what our own storage guidance asks for anyway.
Hand it over after the coffee, not before. If the treat arrives first, you have taught the dog that the stop is the reward and the wait is an obstacle.
Break pieces for a small dog. The guidance on our bag says to break them down, and a terrier working through a whole piece at the wheel is a distraction you do not want at a turn.
Tie the bandana at the start of the outing rather than in the parking lot. A dog who associates the knot with the drive gets the good part of the anticipation, and you get a photo where he is not chewing the knot.
What owning it replaces
A weekly whipped cream cup, and the small guilt that comes with it. A napkin full of crumbs in the console. And the awkward moment when the shop is out of whatever they usually hand over and your dog is looking at the window anyway. Is this actually ice cream?
No, and we would not call it that if the name did not do the work. It is yogurt, banana and peanut butter freeze dried into crunchy pieces, closer to a treat shaped like dessert than to anything you would scoop.
How often is too often?
Once a week is a ritual and every day is a second dinner. Treats are a supplement to a complete diet rather than a replacement, which is the line printed on our own packaging, and a pup cup habit is the easiest place for that to quietly stop being true.
What size bandana for a 45 pound dog?
Measure the collar. American Dog lists Medium at 27 inches for collars of 12 to 15.5 inches, which covers most dogs in that weight range, but a thick necked bulldog and a lean pointer at the same weight take different sizes.
