Nine times out of ten the streaks are the towel, not the cleaner. A microfiber that has been through the laundry with fabric softener, or one that spent last weekend wiping dressing off tires, will smear whatever you spray on the glass. Start with a towel that does nothing else. Then the cleaner has a chance, and the third bottle here is for the film that a cleaner cannot touch.
Why it looks worse at noon
Glass shows its own history under low sun. Inside, there is a soft haze that builds up from the dash and the seats giving off plasticizer in the heat, plus whatever the defroster blew around. Outside, there are water spots and wiper residue baked in hard. Wipe either one with a dirty towel and you move the film around rather than removing it, which is why the windshield looks fine in the garage and terrible on the first bend into the sun. A cleaner, a polish and a towel with one job
Tru Vue does the everyday cleaning. P&S describes it as an excellent and effective water based glass cleaner that removes road film, smoke and dirt, and states that it suits both hot and cold weather work, with a longer working time in the heat and fast enough evaporation in the cold. That second part matters more than it sounds. A cleaner that flashes off instantly in July leaves you chasing dried product across a windshield you cannot reach the middle of. Spray it onto the towel rather than onto the glass, and the overspray stays off the dash.
Clarity Creme is the one most people are missing. P&S is direct about the problem it solves: exterior glass picks up water spots, mineral deposits, calcium build up and wiper blade residue over time, and at that point, in the maker's words, glass cleaner will no longer do the trick. P&S says the glass needs to be polished back to its original condition, and describes Clarity Creme as removing particulate to create a smooth OEM glass finish. You will feel the difference before you see it, because clean glass drags slightly under a fingertip instead of feeling slick with grime. Skip it if your car is a year old and lives in a garage.
The towel here is not the one we wanted. Our three pack wipe down towel is out of stock, so the kit carries the gray HYDRO-FIL instead. It is the twenty by twenty four inch version of 3D's drying towel at 1200 GSM, blended eighty percent polyester to twenty percent polyamide, and 3D rates it at roughly two gallons of absorbency. That is more towel than glass needs, which is fine. Buy it, write GLASS on the tag in laundry marker, and never let it near a wheel or a tire again.
What we are not putting in
No second cleaner for the inside, because there is no useful difference between the two sides of the glass except reach. A lot of kits sell you an interior specific bottle and a stubby tool, and the tool is genuinely handy on a raked windshield, but it is not chemistry and you can do the same job with a flat hand behind a folded towel. Compatibility with aftermarket tint is not stated by the maker for either bottle here, so if your windows are filmed, check the label before the first pass. The order that stops streaks
Do the glass last, after the body is washed and dried. Rinse water runs down onto the windshield from the roof, and if you clean glass first you will be doing it twice.
- Drop the side windows an inch or two and clean the top edge first, since that strip is where the grime line sits.
- Spray Tru Vue onto the towel.
- Work the outside of the windshield in straight horizontal passes, then flip the towel and do the inside vertically, so a remaining streak tells you which side it is on.
- Buff dry with the clean half before the product has a chance to sit.
- If the outside still hazes in the light, that is the Clarity Creme job, worked by hand in small sections with a microfiber towel and then buffed to a bright finish.
Inside of the rear glass is the dog's department. Nose prints come off with the same cleaner and a little more patience, and it goes faster with the dog out of the car and the tailgate propped open.
Two bottles against the blue stuff
A pint of dedicated cleaner does the routine work that a supermarket spray does badly, and the polish handles the once or twice a year problem that no spray will ever fix. Together that is one purchase instead of buying a new bottle of the blue stuff every few months and still squinting through a hazy windshield. Questions
Why does the inside of my windshield keep fogging up with film
Heat drives vapor out of vinyl and plastic, and it condenses on the coldest surface in the car, which is the glass. Parking in shade slows it down. Cleaning it properly every couple of months is the actual answer.
Can I use glass polish on my mirrors
On the glass, yes, with the same light pressure. Keep it off the housing and off any painted trim, because it is an abrasive and it does not know the difference.
Do I need a separate towel for glass
Yes, and it is the single cheapest improvement on this page. A towel that has touched dressing or wax will leave an oily smear on glass every time, no matter what you spray on first.
