Shelter Dog Welcome Kit: What to Buy Week One

Your new rescue is four years old, she has been in the house six days, and she stands up every time you do. A shelter dog welcome kit for that stretch is not another bin of toys. It is one mat that belongs to her, two things worth working at while she is on it, and a treat small enough that you can pay her thirty times for lying back down on her own.

The dog this is built for

An adult who already walks on a lead, already eats, and simply has no idea what to do with an afternoon indoors. Shelter dogs arrive with that gap more often than people expect. They were never bored near a person before, so they shadow you, and shadowing becomes pawing at the chair twenty minutes into a meeting. If your new arrival is a puppy still teething, the puppy chew box is the better start, because everything here assumes a jaw that is done growing.

The pad, the lick mat, the cheddar and the can toy

The Crate Pads Armor from American Dog is the anchor. American Dog describes a 1680D ballistic nylon outer cover that comes off and goes in the washing machine, a 420D inner liner with poly fiber filling, and YKK zippers with a hidden closure so there is less for a determined dog to pick at. It lies flat rather than puffy, which matters beside an office chair, because a thick bed bunches under the castors and slides. Corner ties hold it where you put it. Sizes run from 22 by 13 inches up to 48 by 30. Skip the pad if she already has a bed she likes and will lie on when asked.

The Camp eMat is SodaPup's lick mat, roughly 8 by 8 inches, molded in TPE with suction cups on the back. Those cups grip tile, glass or a car window, and that is the whole point of choosing this one: press it to the floor at the edge of the pad and she cannot shove it across the room. Freeze drying leaves them crunchy and non greasy rather than soft, which is why they do not smear into a keyboard. Quarter them, and if cheese gets a shrug there is a stronger reward in the freeze-dried range.

The Puppy Can Toy is the backup for the meeting that overruns. It is a rubber can shape with a cavity for kibble or peanut butter and a .625 inch opening, 2.5 inches tall and 1.7 ounces in the Small size, and it can be stuffed and frozen. What we left out on purpose

No crate. Most welcome lists lead with one, and a crate earns its place for a dog that already likes the door, but a shelter dog in her first two weeks may have opinions about being shut in. The mat gives you the same go to your spot behavior with nothing to close. Buy the crate later if you want it, and the Armor pad already fits one.

The first week, day by day

Day one, put the pad down while she is out of the room and then ignore it. Do not call her over. Most dogs investigate a new object inside an hour, and every time a foot lands on it you drop a crumb of cheddar and walk off.

Days two and three, load the lick mat and stick it down before your first call rather than after she has already started pacing. She eats, you talk, and nobody has to be clever about it. By day four you can start asking for the behavior: point at the pad, wait her out, pay the moment she lies down, and stop at five minutes so you are the one ending the session.

From day five the can toy comes out for long meetings only. Stuffed and frozen the night before, it runs longer than the mat does. Keep it in the freezer the rest of the time so it stays a thing that means work is happening, not one more object on the living room floor.

What this replaces

Questions people ask in week two

Will she settle on the mat if I leave the room?

Not at first, and that is not the job this kit is doing. You are teaching her to be still while you are visible and occupied, which is the harder version of the skill. Absence is a separate exercise, built later off the same mat.

What size pad should I order?

Measure the floor beside your chair and buy for that gap, not for her length. A dog curls. American Dog lists six sizes, 22 through 48 inches, each an inch and a half thick. Take the largest that does not overhang into a walkway, because anything underfoot stops being hers by Thursday.

Can I use the lick mat in the car?

Yes, and the suction cups exist for exactly that. SodaPup lists tile, glass and vehicle windows as the surfaces they grip. Load it thinly for a drive, because a mat that drips on a back seat turns into a detailing job on Sunday.
