Service Dog Training Kit for a Small Candidate

Your candidate is nine pounds, and every harness on the wall at the pet shop starts at a chest wider than hers. Service dog training at that size hits a gear wall long before it hits a training wall. This kit is four things that genuinely go small. Sizing is the wall, not the method

Raisers of small candidates all describe the same six weeks. The obedience is coming along, the dog is bright, and then you try to buy a harness and the smallest one in stock swallows her. You end up cinching an XS meant for a beagle, the chest strap sits in her armpit, and she starts refusing to step into it. That is not a temperament problem. That is a fit problem wearing a temperament costume. What we left out, starting with the vest

There is no vest here, and that is deliberate. A vest is identification, not equipment, and putting one on a candidate who cannot yet hold a down in a lobby teaches her nothing. Buy the vest from a specialist when the dog is working, and buy it in the size she is then, not the size she is now.

We also left out a clicker and a long line. A clicker is worth owning and costs almost nothing, so it does not need a bundle. A long line belongs to the trail work in the field kit, and a dog doing public access foundations is on a four or six foot lead for months before distance matters.

Portioning for a dog doing fifty reps a day

Start the week by breaking one session's worth of cheddar down on a board rather than in your hand mid session. Quarter pieces for a dog under ten pounds, halves from ten to twenty. Load the pouch with cheddar and put five or six liver pieces in the front pocket, separate, so you are not fishing.

Run short. Five minutes of gearing up and settling, five minutes of the day's skill, then stop while she is still offering. Three of those beat one long one, and a small dog is measurably done sooner than her handler thinks she is.

Count the food, not the reps. If the bag is going down faster than a week, the pieces are too big, and a dog who has eaten her daily calories in cheddar by two in the afternoon is not going to work for you at four. How do I measure for the step-in harness?

Take a chest measurement behind the front legs with a soft tape, then compare it against the weight range rather than trusting the weight alone. Small dogs vary enormously in build at the same weight. A nine pound Italian greyhound and a nine pound pug are not the same shape at all.

Is cheddar too rich for that many repetitions?

Piece size matters more than bag size here. Quartered, a single bite is a fraction of a gram, and quarters are what we would hand a dog under ten pounds. Our packaging puts the rest plainly: treats are a supplement to a complete diet, not a replacement.

Should I add the collapsible bowl?
