Working Dog Gear: The Field Kit for Distance Work

The dog is sixty yards out, a bird goes up, and your voice stops existing. Who runs a setup like this

Handlers with a dog that already has drive and no brakes. Pointing breeds, flushers, a retriever that has learned the truck means birds. The complaint is never that the dog ignores you in the yard; it is that the yard work evaporates at forty yards in cover. If your dog is still learning its name indoors, buy a six foot lead and start there instead.

This is also not a small dog kit. The collar starts at twelve inches and the cord is built for a dog that can drag thirty feet of Biothane without noticing. For a candidate under twenty pounds, the small breed training kit is sized properly.

What the cord, the whistle and the collar each do at distance

The Barrows Ironhide check cord is the spine of the whole thing. It is round quarter inch Biothane in 15 and 30 foot lengths, orange or green, finished with a solid brass snap and a reinforced sleeve where the hardware meets the cord. Barrows describes the Biothane as waterproof and easy to clean, which is the argument against rope: rope holds water and picks up every burr in the field, and round Biothane does neither. Take the 30 foot in orange for open ground, because orange is what you find when the end of the line is lying in November grass. Take the 15 foot for cover, where a long line snags more than it helps.

The Blue Ribbon whistle is Barrows' own mold. It is pea-less, so there is no cork ball to freeze or clog on a cold morning, built in ABS-785R with a rubber mouthpiece and a stainless steel O-ring for a lanyard. The body carries a directional cone that aims the sound down the field instead of back at you. Barrows states that dogs respond to high decibel, lower frequency sound and that the Blue Ribbon was tuned for it. The housing is translucent blue, which sounds like a styling note until you drop it in leaves.

The blue Barrows collar is the one piece people try to save money on. It is one inch Biothane with a brass buckle and a brass D-ring, sized S at 12 to 16 inches through XL at 18 to 22. Barrows describes Biothane as coated webbing that stays flexible in the cold and wipes clean with a damp cloth rather than needing to be conditioned or dried out. Blue reads against tall grass better than a natural tone does, which matters at the end of legal light. Measure the neck before you order, and leave two fingers of room.

Then the beef liver, which is ours. Freeze-dried beef liver, one ingredient, freeze-dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. The smallest bag is 1.5 ounces and that is the one to take, because this is a pocket treat, not a feeding program. It is lightweight and non greasy, so a piece the size of a pencil eraser is full payment for a dog that just left a bird to come back to you. Nothing milder holds up.

The bags are ours too, strawberry scented and leak proof on easy tear rolls. They live in the truck for the parking lot at the trailhead, which is where the situation usually arises, not out in the field.

Why there is no e-collar in this list

Plenty of field kits start with one, and we sell them. A remote trainer is a tool for a handler who already has a whistle recall and wants range beyond a line; it is not a shortcut past the line. The check cord teaches the dog that distance does not cancel the command, and it does that at a cost you can absorb if the training goes sideways. Get the cord working first. How the first month of sessions runs

Week one, no birds. Collar on, cord clipped, dog dragging the full length in a mown field while you do nothing but walk. The cord is furniture at this stage. You want the dog to forget it is attached.

Week two, introduce the whistle at close range with liver in your hand. One blast, dog turns, dog gets paid, every single time, until the sound means food before it means anything else. Do not start blowing it at distance to test whether it works.

Week three, step on the cord. Blow the whistle when the dog is genuinely distracted and thirty feet out, and if nothing happens you have a line to make it happen with rather than a shouting match you lose. What this replaces in a truck box

One line instead of a retractable lead you will break and a rope you will throw away wet. One collar for the season rather than a nylon flat collar you replace every spring after it soaks and stiffens. The whistle is the odd one: it replaces nothing, because the thing it stands in for is your voice, and your voice was never going to carry over a shotgun anyway.

Questions from the field

Fifteen foot or thirty foot check cord?

Thirty in open ground, fifteen in thick cover. If you only buy one and you work mixed country, take the thirty and hold a loop, because you can shorten a long cord and you cannot lengthen a short one.

Does the whistle work in the rain?

It has no pea, so there is nothing inside to swell or stick. A pea whistle on a wet, cold morning is the classic failure, and that is the specific reason Barrows molds this one without one.

Will freeze-dried liver turn to paste in a pocket?

It holds up far better than a soft roll treat, which is the usual alternative and which smears. Keep it in a sealed bag inside the vest rather than loose, and break pieces as you go instead of pre-crumbling the whole bag at the tailgate.

Order the collar a size by measurement, not by breed, and put the cord on the dog in the yard before you take it anywhere that has birds in it.
