Duck Hunting Dog Gear: Waterfowl Kit

Cold water, a blind, and long stretches of nothing followed by ten seconds of everything. Waterfowl gear gets judged on two things: whether it works soaked, and whether it stays quiet and out of sight while the dog sits next to you for two hours. Camo collar, camo lead, a check cord for the steadiness work, white bumpers for water marks, and a treat strong enough to register through a noseful of marsh.
Running a retriever out of a blind
You hunt ducks, the dog sits with you, and most of the season happens in mud and flooded timber. The steadiness is the whole game, because the failure is not a dog that cannot swim. It is a dog that breaks early, or a dog that will not sit still while birds work. Four pieces here are training gear and one is the reward, and the training happens months before opening day. Camo on the dog, white on the water
Barrows Outdoor describes the Bottomland collar as a traditional buckle collar in Mossy Oak Bottomland, cut from the same Biothane coated webbing it uses across the line. Barrows says it worked with Final Draw and Mossy Oak on the pattern. Barrows lists four adjustable sizes at 1 inch wide, S at 12 to 16 inches through XL at 18 to 22, with a buckle and a welded D ring. Barrows gives the care note as a wipe with a damp cloth, mild soap and water for anything stubborn, then air dry. Camo matters here because the dog is sitting beside you, not because it looks right in a photograph. The lead is the short handling one. Barrows describes the Bottomland lead as the flat Biothane lead in the Mossy Oak pattern, a handling lead rather than a long line, doing the walk from the truck, the wait at the blind and the trip back to the kennel. Barrows describes the Biothane as waterproof, odor resistant and easy to wipe clean after a wet day, with solid brass hardware and a folded ergonomic grip. It is sold as a single option with no length choice.
The check cord is where steadiness actually gets built. Barrows describes the Ironhide as a round quarter inch Biothane cord, in 15 foot and 30 foot lengths, in orange or green, finished with a solid brass snap and a reinforced sleeve where the hardware meets the cord. Barrows says round Biothane does not hold water or pick up burrs the way rope does, and that orange stays visible when it is trailing through grass. Take the orange, and take the length that matches your yard rather than the longest one.
White is the water color, which is why the bumpers here are a pack rather than a single. Barrows describes the white pack as being for handlers who run multiple marks in a session and would rather not walk the field between every throw, sold as a 3 pack or a 6 pack. Barrows recommends white where the bumper has to hold against dark cover or water at distance. Barrows lists the bumper at 11.1 inches by 2.5 inches, 10.5 ounces, floating, with a 9.5 inch throw rope, and describes the weighted ends as giving it a balance comparable to a bird. It is a training tool, not a chew toy.
Our freeze-dried beef tripe is the reward that gets through. Beef tripe and nothing else, freeze-dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania, in three sizes. Tripe is naturally strong smelling, and freeze-dried tripe is milder than raw, which is the balance you want: loud enough for a dog whose nose is full of marsh, not so loud that it ruins your truck. Why a neoprene vest and a blind bag are not in here
A vest for cold water is a serious piece of kit and we do not sell one, so it is not in this list. Buy it separately, fit it properly, and expect it to matter more in December than in October. The other absence is deliberate: no heated water bowl and no blind seat. Both are hunter gear rather than dog gear, and the dog gear is what this kit is for.
Cord work from summer to opening day
Run the cord on land. A check cord in cold water is a tangle risk around a dog's legs and around yours, so work steadiness on a bank and let the dog swim free.
Fifteen feet in the yard, thirty in a field. Long line work on new ground is where a dog learns that distance does not mean the rules stopped, and it is the single best use of a summer evening.
Throw one white bumper into water and hold the dog. Release only when it is still. If it breaks, reset without a word, because the correction people reach for is usually noise and noise is what a blind cannot have.
Pay the delivery with tripe, at hand, every time, until the season starts. Then stop carrying treats into the blind, because a dog rummaging in your pocket at first light is a worse problem than a soft delivery.
What the kit saves you buying twice
Biothane in camo replaces a nylon collar and lead that would have spent the season damp and loud. A check cord replaces the long rope that holds water, picks up burrs and doubles its weight in a marsh. A pack of bumpers replaces the walk back to the throw line after every single mark, which is the reason most yard sessions end early. And tripe replaces the biscuit a keyed up dog declines on a cold morning.
Fifteen or thirty foot check cord?
Fifteen for close steadiness work in a yard, thirty when you move to a field and want real distance on the line. If you can only buy one and you have space, take the thirty and choke up on it.
Why white bumpers rather than orange for ducks?
Barrows recommends white where the bumper has to hold against dark cover or water at distance, and that is most of a waterfowl retrieve. Orange is the field color, white is the water color, and a lot of handlers end up owning both.
Will tripe survive a whole season in a vest pocket?
Reseal the bag between sessions and keep it out of standing water. Freeze-dried tripe is dry and stable, but an open bag in a wet vest is how a good treat becomes a bad smell.
