Why Routine Is Medicine: The Science of Consistent Dog Care

Ask a vet what most moves the needle on a dog's healthspan and the answers are unglamorous: keep them lean, keep them moving, keep it consistent. The evidence behind each is strong.
Lean: the diet-restriction lifetime study (Kealy et al., JAVMA 2002) followed Labrador pairs for life, the controlled-portion dogs lived a median 1.8 years (16%) longer and developed chronic disease later. Salt et al., JVIM 2019across 50,000+ dogs and 12 breeds, put the cost of excess weight at up to 2.5 years of life. Meanwhile the APOP 2024 survey says 59% of dogs are carrying it.
Moving: according to reviews of dog walking by Christian, Westgarth et al., 2018, regular walks lower disease risk for both species, and behavioral research by Westgarth et al., 2015 finds the strongest predictor of whether a dog actually gets walked is the strength of the routine and the sense of obligation around it.
Consistent: routines only hold if everyone holds them. That's the problem Co-Pilot Care Sync was built for: one shared live log for meals, water, walks, and potty breaks across every caregiver, with automatic pings when scheduled care gets missed. The routine keeps itself.
Care Sync ships with the Sniff and Shift App this August, and the beta is live on TestFlight nowjoin the Pit Crew for release news. Tracking aid, not medical advice: your vet always comes first.
