Lick mats for large dogs: bigger mats and deeper grooves

A large dog works through a standard lick mat quickly if her mouth is bigger than the grooves and her enthusiasm for our freeze-dried treats is high. A lick mat for a large dog needs size and depth. Eight inches square is the practical minimum for a dog over 50 pounds. The grooves should be deep enough that she has to work to extract the food, not just vacuum it up in moments.

Sizing for big mouths

A large dog's mouth can cover a small mat in one or two licks. A mat about 8 inches square or larger gives her enough texture to work on for 15 to 30 minutes of focused activity. If she's a very large breed or an extremely enthusiastic eater, consider rotating two mats so one freezes while she works the other.

Groove depth

Deep grooves challenge a large dog and make the mat more interesting for her to work through. SodaPup's standard eMats have grooves that work for large dogs. The Sky eMat and Zombie eMat are both large enough. The Citrus eMat with suction cups is similarly sized.

Loading heavily for aggressive eaters

A large dog benefits from a heavier load. Fill the grooves well, add a layer of yogurt or pureed treat, then freeze it. A full mat takes longer to clear than a lightly loaded one. Crumble our freeze-dried beef liver or beef tripe throughout to add protein and extend the session.

Rotating mats for continuous enrichment

Keep two mats in rotation if your large dog works through them quickly. Load one, put the other in the freezer. When she finishes the first, swap it out for the frozen one. This strategy gives her uninterrupted enrichment time and keeps the cold and novelty going throughout the day.

Training and exercise routines

A large dog with high energy benefits from multiple lick mat sessions throughout the day. Pair the mat with regular exercise and play to give her a balanced enrichment routine. Frozen mats work especially well after exercise when she's ready to settle and rest.

In the Toys aisle

The Sky eMat in light blue or yellow, 16.99 dollars, is a full-sized square mat suitable for large dogs. The Zombie eMat, 15.99 dollars, is the same size and similarly deep grooved. The Citrus eMat with suction cups, 15.99 dollars, offers the same square format with suction cups for bath time or wall mounting.

Questions

Can a large dog destroy a lick mat?

Not easily. Silicone and TPE are durable, and these mats are built to last. A large dog might shred the edges if she chews on it instead of licking, but normal licking won't damage the mat.

How often can I use a lick mat with a large dog?

Once or twice daily is fine. Large dogs have big appetites and can handle regular enrichment activities. Just make sure she has plenty of water nearby.

Should I freeze the mat for a large dog?

Yes. Freezing extends the session and slows her down. A frozen mat keeps her occupied longer than a room-temperature one.

What if my large dog tries to pick up the mat and shake it?

This is common. Keep an eye on her during use. If she shakes the mat, gently redirect her to lick it instead. With time, most large dogs learn the mat is for licking, not shaking or throwing.

Can I put two large dogs on one mat?

Not during the same session. Mats can become a resource to guard. Give each dog her own mat, or supervise very carefully if they share a mat at different times.
