Slow feeder as enrichment: making meals last longer
Share
Enrichment doesn't always mean toys. A slow feeder bowl turns your dog's meal into a puzzle, and pairing it with our freeze-dried treats keeps them engaged and thinking. Instead of finishing food in seconds, your dog works through a maze to get each bite, stretching mealtime into something satisfying.
Why enrichment at the bowl matters
Dogs benefit from mental stimulation during meals. A maze pattern carved into the bowl forces your dog to lick and pick through grooves instead of gulping, which engages their mind. This can help with comfort, and give your dog a sense of accomplishment at something as routine as eating.
SodaPup slow feeders come in shallow and deep designs to fit different dog sizes and eating styles. The shallow trays work for smaller dogs and dogs with sensitive mouths. The deep bowls work for medium to large dogs who need more capacity.
Shallow versus deep for your dog
Shallow trays like the Garden Design eTray and Mandala eTray work for small to medium dogs. They're easier to reach and clean, and they keep meals visible so you can monitor portions. The Water Frog eTray sits shallow as well, with a frog-themed ridge pattern that turns a meal into light foraging.
All three are about 8 inches across and made from soft TPE that won't scratch floors or hurt gums. Shallow designs typically hold 1 to 2.25 cups, which works for most daily meals.
Combining slow feeding with treats
After your dog finishes their regular meal from the slow feeder bowl, add crumbled freeze-dried treats as a reward. Press small pieces into the maze grooves or sprinkle them on top so your dog gets to hunt for them. This builds a routine around the slow feeder and makes mealtime something your dog looks forward to.
You can also use the bowl for training sessions. Place a few treats at the bottom of the maze and let your dog work to find them, turning training into enrichment.

Questions
How long should enrichment meals take?
A slow feeder should stretch mealtime to at least five to ten minutes, compared to the usual thirty seconds. If your dog still finishes quickly, try a deeper bowl or add a smaller portion so your dog spends more time working for it.
Can I mix wet and dry food in a slow feeder?
Yes. The maze pattern works with both. Wet food clings to the grooves and makes the puzzle last longer. Start with dry food if your dog is new to slow feeders, then transition to a mix once they get the hang of it.
What dogs benefit from enrichment feeding?
Any dog can benefit from a slower meal. Puppies learn patience. Dogs who eat too fast benefit from comfort. Active dogs get mental stimulation. Older dogs enjoy the routine and pace of picking through a puzzle at their own pace.
Are these bowls easy to clean?
The TPE material rinses clean under running water. For stuck-on food, soak in warm water for a few minutes and scrub gently with a soft brush. Shallow trays are typically easier to clean than deep bowls because you can reach all the grooves.
