Slow feeder for wet food and soaked kibble

Wet food slides off a regular bowl, and soaked kibble falls through maze grooves. Our freeze-dried treats work great with slow feeder trays designed for wet food that hold meals in place while slowing eating. Look for shallow trays with texture that grips food, or bowls with suction cups to keep things steady.

Trays versus bowls for wet food

Shallow trays work better for wet food than deep bowls because the wide surface spreads the meal out. Your dog has to work across the tray instead of dipping into a bowl, which naturally slows eating. SodaPup makes trays from TPE, a soft material that grips wet food and doesn't let it slide.

The texture of the maze pattern in the tray grabs wet food and holds it in place as your dog eats. Soaked kibble, ground meat, and wet canned food all stay put better on a tray than they would in a smooth bowl.

Adding suction cups for messy meals

If your dog pushes the tray around while eating wet food, try a tray with suction cups. The Mandala Softie eTray has built-in suction cups that stick to tile or hardwood floors, holding the bowl steady while your dog eats. It's made from soft TPE in pastel colors and sits 0.6 inches deep, shallow enough for small to medium dogs.

Without suction cups, the Garden Design eTray and Waiting Dogs eTray work fine for dogs who eat without pushing the bowl. Both grip food well and hold a larger portion than the suction-cup option.

Preparing wet food on a slow feeder

Spread wet or soaked food thin across the tray rather than piling it in the center. The wide surface forces your dog to forage across the maze pattern instead of gulping from one spot. If you're mixing dry kibble with canned food or broth, the texture of the tray grabs both equally well.

For freeze-dried treats frozen on meals, a tray with suction cups holds the frozen block steady. A frozen wet meal takes much longer to eat than room temperature, and the suction cups keep it from moving as your dog licks and chips away at it.

In the Toys aisle

The Garden Design eTray ($19.99) has a botanical pattern, holds 2.25 cups, and grips wet food without sliding.

The Mandala Softie eTray ($19.99) includes suction cups and soft TPE in three pastel colors for dogs who need their bowl anchored.

The Waiting Dogs eTray ($17.99) holds 2.25 cups and has a silhouette pattern that grips messy meals well.

Questions

Can I wash a slow feeder in the dishwasher?

Check the SodaPup label, but most TPE trays should be hand-washed. The suction cups on the Mandala Softie work best if you wash them by hand so you can clean the cups thoroughly and check that they still stick properly.

How do I keep the bowl from sliding during wet food meals?

Place a non-slip mat under the tray, or use a tray with suction cups like the Mandala Softie. Suction cups grip most hard floors and keep the bowl steady even when your dog pushes against it.

Should wet food be to leave on a slow feeder?

Wet food should not sit out longer than 15 to 20 minutes in warm weather, or 30 minutes in cool conditions. Feed your dog their meal and clean the tray right after so bacteria don't build up.

Can I freeze wet food on a tray overnight?

Yes. Freezing wet meals extends how long it takes to eat and turns mealtime into enrichment. Thaw slightly before serving if your dog prefers room-temperature meals, or let them work on it frozen depending on your dog's preference.
