Valentine Day Dog Treats for the February Drive

Our freeze-dried treats do not travel well in the heat, but a February drive is a different story, and this year a strawberry heart joins the valentine day dog treats we send out for it. The Camaro handles cold mornings fine, and so does a pouch of freeze-dried pieces riding along in the glovebox for the whole trip.

The first drives of the year still run cold enough for a jacket and a warm cup for the driver.

A strawberry heart, arriving for the season

The Strawberry Heart Pup-Ornaut Freeze-Dried Dog Ice Cream arrives for the season this February. It joins the Pup-Ornaut line the same way the pumpkin and banana peanut butter flavors do the rest of the year, freeze-dried in small batches, built around a different shape and flavor for the month rather than a whole new recipe. We will update the page here once it lands on the shelf; for now it is simply on its way to us. You can find it at Strawberry Heart Pup-Ornaut Freeze-Dried Dog Ice Cream.

Once it is on the shelf it will sit alongside the rest of the Pup-Ornaut lineup, treated the same as any of our other flavors rather than as a special edition that disappears the day after the holiday. The pumpkin and banana peanut butter versions stay in rotation the rest of the year, and the plan is for the strawberry heart flavor to work the same way once it arrives, not as a one week item we retire the moment February ends.

What goes in the pouch

Our treats go in first, and for a drive that means something that will not melt or crumble on the seat. Freeze-Dried Beef Liver Dog Treats hold up in a pouch or a glovebox without special handling, single ingredient and freeze-dried in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. A second bag of Freeze-Dried Cheddar Cheese Dog Treats rides along too, since a long drive usually calls for more than one texture before it is over, and Ella tends to work through the smaller pieces first no matter which bag comes out.

Before the next drive, our trail and travel page is where we keep the gear that has earned a permanent spot in the car, updated as we swap pieces in and out rather than left the way it was set up last year. It is less a shopping list and more a running note of what actually gets used trip after trip, which tends to be a shorter list than what started in the trunk.

The route itself does not change much from one February to the next either. It runs past the same stretch of gravel road, past the same lake, and back home before the light goes, which is really the whole plan for a first drive of the year rather than anything more ambitious.

Windows cracked, heater on

Late February still catches a few blossoms if the drive is timed right.

A February drive with Ella looks less like a road trip and more like an errand that took a scenic route on the way there. The heater runs, the windows crack an inch, and the pouch sits within reach the whole way rather than buried somewhere in the back. It is a smaller version of the drives we take once the weather turns, and it is worth doing anyway rather than waiting for a warmer month to get started.

For a running list of where the dog-friendly car crowd shows up once the season opens back up, our dog-friendly car events board stays current through the year, rather than us guessing at a calendar from here.

None of it requires much planning ahead of time. The Camaro gets checked over the way it always does before a drive, the pouch gets filled from whichever bag is open in the kitchen, and the rest sorts itself out once the tires are on gravel instead of pavement.

Questions

Is the strawberry heart Pup-Ornaut available to order now?

It arrives for the season rather than sitting on the shelf today. The product page linked above is where we will update it once it lands, and we would rather say that plainly than guess at a date we cannot back up.

Do the freeze-dried treats hold up on a cold drive?

Yes. They are dry to begin with, so a February morning in the Camaro does not change much about how they travel compared to any other month of the year.

What is on the trail and travel page?

It is where we keep the gear that has earned a spot in the car over repeated drives, from seat covers to the smaller items that live in the glovebox alongside the treat pouch itself.
