Dog Gotcha Day Gift: What to Buy for the Date

Most rescues come home with a guessed birthday and a documented gotcha day. The second date is the one you actually know, and it is the better one to mark, because it is the anniversary of something that happened to both of you rather than a number on a form. A dog gotcha day gift works best when it is quiet: one thing to eat on the day, one reward worth asking a favor for, and a toy that is still in the house next spring.

The date you actually have

A lot of adopters feel slightly silly about this. There is no card aisle for it and no established shape, so people either do nothing or overcorrect into a full party with other dogs invited. Neither is right for most rescues, and the second one is genuinely a bad idea for a dog that finds a house full of strangers hard work.

What works is a normal day with three deliberate moments in it. That is all the kit is: a longer walk, a reward for one thing done well, and something to eat that the dog does not get in an ordinary week.

Five things for a day that stays quiet

Freeze-dried shrimp is the reward and it should not come out more than a few times. One ingredient, whole raw shrimp, in a 1.5 ounce bag, and the highest protein figure on any panel we publish. It smells like nothing else in the cabinet, which is precisely the value: save it for the recall or the trick you want on camera and it works every year.

What is not in it

No card, no candle, no hat. A candle on anything a dog is about to eat is a photograph you take at some risk, and a hat is a thing most dogs endure rather than enjoy. If you want the day photographed properly, the bandana and good light do more than props.

No new bed or crate either. Changing a rescue's sleeping arrangements is a project rather than a present, and doing it on a day that is already unusual is a way to turn a good day into an unsettled night. Beds are a normal Tuesday purchase.

How to spend the day

Walk first and walk somewhere new, which for most dogs is worth more than anything you can buy. Take the bags, because a new route means you do not know where the bins are.

Ask for one thing when you get back. Whatever the dog's best trick is, or a recall across the garden, and pay it with shrimp rather than with the usual treat. One request, one jackpot. Then the ice cream, portioned, and the football filled and put down while you get on with the evening.

Where the money actually goes

Mostly into the football, which is the only item here still working in six months. Our dog is small. Is the football wrong?

What if the dog hates attention?

Should we do this on the adoption date or the day we got home?

Whichever is on the paperwork, and then keep using it. The point of an anniversary is that it repeats, so pick one date and stop relitigating it every year.
