Aluminum Wheel Cleaner Kit

Bare polished aluminum has no clear coat over it. That one fact is the reason this kit exists and the reason a strong acidic wheel cleaner left to dry on a polished rim leaves a stain you cannot wash off. An aluminum wheel cleaner routine is gentler and faster: a high foaming cleaner rinsed before it can dry, a general cleaner for the wells behind the wheel, and a dressing on the tires once the metal is dry. Know which wheel you actually own
Most modern alloys are painted or clear coated at the factory and behave like paint. Polished and machined aluminum is different, and so is a wheel somebody polished or coated after it left the factory. Look at the barrel: if it has the same finish as the face and a slight orange peel to it, that is a coating. If the face takes fingerprints and dulls where water sits, it is bare.
The cleaner, the wells and the tires
3D Wheel Kleen is the gallon that does the wheel face and the barrel. It is a high foaming wheel and tire cleaner that clings rather than running straight off, so it holds long enough to break the bond on brake dust, road grime, grease and oil, and it is used on tires, wheels and calipers. 3D lists it as "Safe for all factory finished wheel types", and adds that it is not recommended for aftermarket coated wheels, so check what you have before the first corner. Work cool, one corner at a time, and rinse before it dries.
P&S Mud Buster is the pint for the wheel wells behind the wheel. Clean those first or whatever is caked in the arch runs back down over a wheel you have just finished. P&S says it clings to the surface it lands on so it can penetrate the deposits instead of running straight off, and notes it may be used as it comes or diluted, including through a foam cannon. On a trailer this is the bottle that gets used up fastest.
3D Ultra Protectant goes on the tires at the end, once the wheels are dry. It is a water based dressing for tires and exterior trim, the vendor description says it dries to the touch and leaves no greasy look, and 3D lists the product under "High-Gloss Finish", "UV Protection" and "Long-Lasting Results". 3D gives four steps: spray onto the sidewall, spread with an applicator pad, wipe the sidewall with a clean towel to even it out, then allow 15 to 20 minutes before driving.
The polish we deliberately left out
No metal polish in the three. Polishing bare aluminum is a separate job with its own pads, its own mess and a real risk of putting swirls into a mirror finish if you rush it. A pint of metal polish is there as an add on for when the cleaning routine is established and the wheels are still dull rather than dirty.
No acid based brake dust remover either, for the obvious reason. Those products earn their place on coated alloys and are the wrong tool on bare metal. Everything else for this corner of the car is on the Wash Bay, and the full wheel shelf can be filtered on Explore.
Working a corner
Do the wells first with the general cleaner and a long brush, then rinse the arch out. Now the wheel, cool to the touch and out of the sun. Foam on, let it dwell, agitate the face, the barrel and around the lug seats with a soft brush, then rinse hard before anything dries. Move to the next corner and repeat rather than doing all four at once, because four wheels drying at the same time is how a bare rim gets marked.
Tires last, on dry rubber, with the dressing on a pad rather than sprayed at the wheel. Then give it the quarter hour before you drive.
What the kit replaces
Polished aluminum wheels get neglected because people are afraid of ruining them, and neglect is what actually ruins them. A gallon of the right cleaner covers a season on a truck and trailer together. The pint and the dressing both carry over to the rest of the vehicle, so only the wheel cleaner is specific to the job.
Questions we get
Are these products right for chrome as well?
Chrome plating is a different surface again. The cleaner is listed for factory finished wheel types rather than for chrome specifically, so treat a chrome wheel gently, rinse fast, and dry it rather than letting it sit wet.
Why do my wheels spot after washing?
Bare aluminum shows mineral spotting the way glass does. Dry the wheels with a towel instead of leaving them, especially if you are on well water.
Can I use the tire dressing on the wheel itself?
No, keep it on the rubber. Dressing on a metal wheel face attracts dust and makes the next clean harder than it needed to be.
