P&S Brake Buster Total Wheel Cleaner gallon jug of purple gel with a black Double Black label

Wheel and Tire Cleaner Kit

Wheels are not washed as a set of four. They are washed one at a time, because every product here works by sitting wet on the surface long enough to do something, and a wheel that dries mid job is a wheel you have to start again. So: decon, clean, dress, one corner, then move. Three bottles cover it, and the rest of our single job kits are on the bundle guides hub.

Grey faces and brown sidewalls

Two different problems get lumped together here. The grey film on the face of a wheel is hot iron thrown off the brake rotor, embedded in the finish rather than sitting on it, and a general cleaner will take some of it and leave the rest. The brown haze on a sidewall is old dressing and road film, and it is why a new coat of shine goes on patchy.

Front wheels take most of the braking, so they will always look worse than the rears, and a car with soft pads will look worse than one without. If your wheels go grey within days rather than weeks, there is a heavier duty kit for that. The full shelf of wheel chemistry lives on the Wash Bay hub.

Iron, then gel, then dressing

GLW Iron Remover goes first and it is the only one of the three that changes color to show you it is working. 3D describes it as a high performance, acid free iron remover that breaks down and loosens brake dust, traffic pollution and road film. The maker says it cleans painted, chrome, polished and coated aluminum wheels without damaging the surface. It comes in a pint with a trigger. Spray a cool dry wheel, leave it the time the label states, and do not let it dry.

Brake Buster is the cleaning step, and the reason it is here rather than a cheaper spray is how it behaves on a vertical surface. P&S describes it as "a unique cleaning gel that adheres to the wheel surface and penetrates the dirt deposits", which is what makes it stay put on a vertical wheel face instead of running into the arch. The maker says it "safely removes accumulated brake dust, oil, dirt, stains and light corrosion from premium quality wheels without damaging the delicate surface", and adds that it deposits a thin layer of corrosion inhibitors behind it. The gallon is the refill size, meant to be decanted into a labeled quart bottle rather than carried around the car.

Ultra Protectant finishes the tire, and it is water based rather than solvent based. The vendor description says it dries to the touch and leaves no greasy look, and 3D lists the product under High-Gloss Finish, UV Protection and Long-Lasting Results. That matters more than it sounds: a greasy dressing slings off the sidewall at speed and lands in a line down the rocker panel you just washed. 3D gives four steps: spray the sidewall, spread it with a foam applicator, wipe the excess off with a clean towel, and repeat only if you want more gloss.

These three ship as one consignment. Pal Automotive items are sold and shipped by Pal Automotive through Shopify Collective, not made or shipped by Sniff and Shift. They come out of New Jersey with their own tracking, usually quickly, which is worth knowing if you are timing this around a weekend.

What is not in the kit

No brushes and no wheel woolies. Every wheel kit online includes a set, and a barrel brush genuinely is the difference between a clean wheel and a clean wheel face. We left them out because brush choice depends entirely on your wheel design, and a stiff brush that suits a five spoke alloy will scratch a painted multi spoke. Pick brushes by looking at your own wheels.

There is no tire prep here either, which you will notice if your sidewalls are already brown. Dressing over old dressing is the usual cause of that, and the honest answer is that it needs stripping first with a dedicated prep rather than more product on top.

One corner at a time

Do the wheels before you wash the paint. Everything you are about to spray runs down and off, and doing it in the other order means rinsing brake dust over clean panels. Start at the front left with the wheel cool to the touch, because hot metal flashes product dry in seconds.

Iron remover first, on the face and into the barrel as far as you can reach. Let it bleed. Then Brake Buster over the top, agitate with your brush, and rinse the whole corner thoroughly including the arch. Move to the next wheel and repeat, so the first one drains while you work. Dressing goes on at the very end of the whole wash, once the tires are dry, applied to the rubber only.

One warning about the smell. Iron remover smells like something died, it carries across a driveway for the whole time it is bleeding, and the runoff stains a light concrete pad if you leave it to dry. Rinse the ground as well as the wheel.

What it replaces

A tire shine aerosol and a general purpose spray, neither of which was built for this. The aerosol is the expensive one over time, because half of every can lands on the wheel and the ground. A gallon of gel cleaner and a pint of dressing applied with a pad will outlast a shelf of cans, and the iron step is the one that stops you scrubbing at a stain that was never going to brush off.

Questions

Do I really need the iron remover if I have a wheel cleaner?

If your wheels come fully clean with the gel cleaner alone, skip it. The test is the finish after a rinse: run a hand over a dry wheel face and if it feels gritty rather than smooth, iron is still in there and only the decon step lifts it.

Can these go on a coated or ceramic wheel?

3D says its iron remover cleans painted, chrome, polished and coated aluminum wheels without damaging the surface, which is the only compatibility statement either maker publishes for this kit. Anything beyond that is not stated by the maker, so test a small area low on the wheel first.

Why does my dressing keep slinging off?

Too much of it, applied to a tire that was still wet. Dressing needs a dry sidewall and a thin coat worked in with a pad, and 3D says to allow fifteen to twenty minutes of dwell before you drive. If it is still shiny and tacky when you drive away, some of it is about to be on your paint.
