Tire Shine Kit
Share
Tire shine does not wear off after two days. It lets go, because it never touched rubber in the first place. What sits on most sidewalls is a film of old dressing, brake dust and road grime, and anything new laid over that has nothing to hold. Three bottles, used in one order: clean, strip, dress.
The two day problem
You dress the tires on Saturday and by Wednesday they look chalky again. The gel is not what failed. Take a clean applicator and run it once across a dry sidewall of a car you dressed a month ago, and it comes away brown. That brown is silicone and road film stacked up in layers, and it is a poor foundation. Everything below is aimed at getting rid of it before anything shiny goes on. The rest of the car care sits in the Wash Bay, and the other kits are on the bundle guides hub.
What each bottle does on the sidewall
Mud Buster is the scrub. P&S describes it as a cleaner that clings to the surface it lands on so it can penetrate the deposits instead of running straight off, which on a vertical sidewall is the difference between working and dripping into the gravel. Spray it, agitate with a stiff brush, rinse before it dries. Surface and coating compatibility is not stated by the maker for this one, so keep it to tires and wheel wells and read the label before you take it anywhere else. If the tires came off the rack last week you can skip it.
Undressed is the bottle most people have never owned, and it is the one that changes the result. P&S states it penetrates and removes layers of road dirt, oil and grime from the tire surface to brighten raised white lettering and whitewalls, using alkaline cleaning solutions, water based solvents and detergents. Translated: it takes the old dressing off. It comes as a gallon, which looks like a lot until you start using it at every wash. No dilution ratio appears in the product text, so mix it the way the label on your jug tells you to.
Wipe N Shine is the dressing itself, and it is a gel rather than an aerosol. That matters twice. A gel goes on with an applicator instead of misting across the quarter panel, and P&S says it may be applied in both dry and wet conditions, so you are not standing around waiting for the tire to dry. Work one even coat around the sidewall. Then go back with the dry side of the applicator and wipe the gloss down to whatever level you actually want, which for most people is less than the first pass gives you.
What is missing on purpose
There is no wheel cleaner in here. Almost every list that shows up under this search puts one in, and it makes the kit look more complete than it is. Wheels and tires want different chemistry and different brushes, and combining them tends to leave the wheel side underpowered. Do that job with the wheel and tire cleaner kit instead. There is no applicator pad either, since the ones worth using come in packs and most garages already have a drawer full.
The afternoon, in order
Tires first, before the body gets washed. Anything you spray on a sidewall will run down onto clean paint if you do it in the other order, and you will end up washing twice.
- Rinse the wheel and tire to knock the loose grit off.
- Spray Mud Buster over the sidewall and up into the wheel well, work it with a stiff brush, then rinse it before it dries.
- Undressed next, agitated and rinsed until the water runs clear.
- Check the brush, and if it is still loading up brown, go around the tire once more.
- Dry the tire, or do not, since the gel does not mind.
- Wipe N Shine on an applicator, one pass around the sidewall, then a second dry pass to even it out.
The whole thing takes about twenty minutes the first time and closer to ten once the old buildup is gone for good. Do the second tire while the first is still drying and the afternoon stays short.
What a gel replaces
One pint of this stuff stands in for a shelf of aerosol cans, and it lands where you point it instead of on the rocker panel. The gallon of prep is the odd one out on cost, and it earns that back by making every dressing you apply afterwards last through a rain instead of through a Tuesday. Questions
How long should tire dressing last
No maker states a number, and rain and miles decide it. What changes is the baseline, because dressing on stripped rubber outlasts dressing laid over old dressing every time. If yours is gone the next morning, the sidewall was not clean, or the coat went on too heavy and slung off at speed.
Do I need the prep every time
No. Use it the first time and then perhaps once a month after that. The whole point is that once the old layers are gone, a wash and a fresh coat is enough.
Can I get a satin finish instead of a wet look
Wipe the second pass harder, or swap the dressing for the ceramic matte tire product in the add ons, which is built for a flat finish rather than a gloss one.

The dressing and the prep both come from P&S. What we make ourselves is freeze-dried dog treats, which leave our kitchen in Malvern, Pennsylvania on their own.
