Drying Towel Car Kit

A drying towel that pushes water instead of taking it in has not worn out. It has been coated. Fabric softener and household laundry detergent leave a film in the fibers that blocks the thing you bought the towel for, and once that film is there, a hotter wash does not fix it. Why the laundry aisle ruins microfiber
Softener works by depositing a waxy coating on fiber so it feels smoother against skin. On a bath towel that is pleasant. On microfiber it fills the split fiber structure that does the absorbing, and the towel goes from taking water in to smearing it around. Regular detergent adds its own residue and optical brighteners on top. Neither one is doing anything wrong. They are just built for cotton, and microfiber is not cotton.
One towel and two detergents
Our 20 by 40 drying towel is out of stock, so this kit runs the 3D Gray HYDRO-FIL instead. It is 1200 GSM in a 20 by 24 inch size, blended 80 percent polyester to 20 percent polyamide, and 3D rates it at about two gallons of absorbency. A sedan takes two passes with a towel that size rather than the single sweep a 20 by 40 gives you. That is the honest tradeoff on the substitution, and it is the only thing about this kit we would change if the larger size were on the shelf.
P&S Rags to Riches is the gallon for the paint towels. P&S calls it the next generation of microfiber detergents, states that the advanced formula deep cleans and restores cleaning and detailing products, and positions it to soften, brighten and bring new life to quality microfiber. It goes in the machine in place of your normal detergent, with nothing else added. P&S notes it is concentrated for commercial use, so start with a small dose in a home machine and work up rather than pouring a capful out of habit.
3D Towel Kleen is the second gallon, and it exists so the dirty towels never share a wash with the good ones. 3D formulated it to clean both water soluble and water insoluble residues out of microfiber, foam and wool, and says it washes towels, microfiber pads, wool pads and foam pads clean while leaving no residues behind in or on the fibers or foam. For a medium load of roughly twenty five towels, 3D says to add two ounces and run a heavy duty cycle with a second rinse, which puts a gallon at around sixty four washes. Run wheel towels, jamb rags and polishing pads through this one. If you only own four towels and they all do paint, skip it and buy a second drying towel with the money.
The thing this kit refuses to include
There is no towel multipack here, which looks odd on a page about towels. Buying twelve cheap towels and washing them wrong produces twelve bad towels. One towel that is looked after outlasts the pile, and once the laundry routine is fixed, adding more is a sensible purchase rather than a replacement cycle.

The laundry routine that keeps them alive
Sort into piles before anything goes in the machine. Paint towels, drying towels, interior towels, then wheels and pads. Wash warm rather than hot, detergent only, no softener, no dryer sheet. Tumble dry low or hang them. Low heat is what keeps the fibers open and absorbent, and the two we cooked on a hot cycle never came back.
Keep a fourth pile for the dog towels and the picnic blanket. Whatever comes out of the back of the car carries sand and hair, and one of those in the drum is how grit gets into a drying towel that never touched a wheel.
What it saves you
Most people replace drying towels because the towels stopped working, not because they wore through. Two gallons of the right detergent outlast several rounds of that replacement cycle, and a 1200 GSM towel washed properly stays usable for years. The wheel towel that would otherwise have contaminated your paint towels is worth more than either gallon.
Laundry questions we get
Can I save a towel that has already been washed with softener?
Sometimes. Two or three washes in a microfiber detergent with no softener will pull a lot of the coating back out. If it still beads water after that, it goes in the wheel pile.
Do I really need two different detergents?
Not on day one. The second gallon is about keeping brake dust and polish residue out of the towels that touch your paint, which matters more as the towel count grows.
Can these go in a shared laundry machine?
Yes, though run an empty rinse cycle first if the last user was doing bedding. Softener residue in the drum transfers.
