P&S Hot Shot High Power Degreaser Concentrate gallon jug with a black Pro Series label

Engine Bay Cleaner Kit

Wait until the engine is cold. Cold metal, cold manifold, hood up for an hour if the car has just come home. Everything else about cleaning an engine bay is straightforward. What people shop for as one engine bay cleaner is three bottles here, because a single strength will not do the whole bay. A concentrated degreaser handles the baked on grease, a lighter general purpose cleaner takes the jambs and the plastic covers, and a quick detailer finishes the painted parts once the bay is dry. More kits in that shape are on the bundle guides hub.

Why the bay is a different job from the paint

What sits under a hood is not the same soil as what sits on a fender. Road film mixed with oil mist and heat bakes into a grey skin that a car shampoo will not touch, and it is sitting on aluminum, plastic, rubber hose and painted steel all within a hand span of each other. That is why the kit steps down in strength rather than using one product everywhere, and why the last bottle is a detailer rather than another cleaner.

Cover what you would not want soaked. Alternator, intake opening, fuse box, coil packs. A plastic bag and a rubber band is the whole technique.

Three strengths, not one

P&S Hot Shot is the gallon at the heavy end. P&S calls it "a very strong degreasing and cleaning solution that completely dissolves grease and dirt", and says it "utilizes new, high efficiency, biodegradable detergents and solvents for remarkable results". That biodegradable wording is the maker describing its own formula, not a certification anyone issued. P&S says it may be used full strength on tough applications or diluted with water for lighter cleaning, and does not publish exact dilution numbers, so start weak and work up. Skip it entirely on a bay that has never been cleaned wrong and only looks dusty.

P&S Mud Buster is the pint for everything that does not need the heavy stuff. Door jambs. The cowl, the plastic engine cover, the underside of the hood liner edge. P&S says it clings to the surface it lands on so it can penetrate the deposits instead of running straight off, which matters on a vertical jamb where a thin spray would be on the floor before it worked. P&S also says it prepares tires for dressing and leaves behind a thin layer of corrosion inhibitors.

P&S Pit Stop closes it out. P&S describes it as an extremely easy to use detail spray that works on gloss and matte finishes alike, and here it is only for the painted parts once everything has dried: the strut towers, the slam panel, the inner fenders. A bay that has been degreased and then left alone looks stripped. Twenty minutes with a detailer and two towels is what makes it read as finished.

What we did not put in the kit

No dressing. Most lists for this search go straight to a shiny hose treatment, and a bay that is wet with silicone attracts dust within a week and looks worse than it started. A dressing belongs here eventually, applied thin, which is why one sits in the add ons rather than in the three.

No brush set either. You almost certainly own an old paint brush and a toothbrush, and those two plus a drain brush cover a bay. Spend the money on the degreaser instead. The wider shelf is on the Wash Bay. The degreaser shelf and everything beside it is searchable on Explore.

The order that keeps you out of trouble

Cold engine, hood up, sensitive parts bagged. Rinse gently first with a hose rather than a lance, because pressure at close range finds connector seals. Then degreaser on the greasy areas, agitate with a brush, and do not let it dry. Mud Buster on the jambs and the covers while the degreaser dwells. Rinse everything at low pressure from the top down. Now blow it out or run the engine to warm it dry, and only then bring out the detailer.

Hot Shot day is a shut kitchen door day at our place. Ella stays in until the run off is down the drain and the driveway has been hosed, which is the one part of this job worth being fussy about.

What it replaces

A shop engine bay clean is an hour of labour plus chemicals. The gallon here covers many bays and doubles as the degreaser for wheel wells, the mower and the garage floor, so it does not sit idle between uses. The pint and the detailer both carry over into the rest of the car, which is the argument for buying three products rather than one aerosol.

Questions before you open the hood

Can I pressure wash an engine bay?

At distance and low pressure, yes. Up close, no. Water forced into a connector or a sealed module causes problems that show up a week later as a fault code, not as a wet patch.

Do I need to disconnect the battery?

Not for a careful rinse on a cold engine. Cover the terminals and the fuse box and keep the water moving rather than pointing it at one spot.

Why does my bay look dull after cleaning?

Because degreaser removed everything, including the oily film that was making plastics look dark. That is what the detailer pass and, later, a thin dressing are for.

How it ships

Pal Automotive items are sold and shipped by Pal Automotive through Shopify Collective, not made or shipped by Sniff and Shift. One vendor out of Piscataway, New Jersey, usually within a business day, although each bottle carries its own tracking and the gallon sets the pace for the two beside it. Do not start the bay before the whole order lands. The jambs and the covers are the half that makes the job look finished, and a bay left half cleaned for a week collects dust in exactly the places you just opened up.
