Puppy Nipping and Chewing: The Redirect Kit

A ten week old puppy bites because that is how it finds out what things are, and the skin on a human forearm is the most interesting material in the house. Puppy nipping and chewing is not a behavior problem at that age, it is a sorting problem: the puppy needs better objects than you, available at the exact second the mouth opens. Why redirecting beats correcting at this age
Telling a puppy off for mouthing works about as well as telling a toddler off for touching. The behavior is not optional yet. What is optional is the target.
So the job is to have something better within reach before the puppy reaches you, and to make handing it over the thing that pays. That takes more than one object, because different moments call for different textures.
Four objects for four different moments

Anti-chew sprays are the obvious fourth item and we did not include one. They work on furniture legs, sometimes, for some dogs. They do nothing for the actual problem here, which is a puppy heading for your hands, and a spray on your own skin is a short road to a puppy that avoids being touched. Better objects, faster.
What to do in the moment the mouth opens
Keep one object in each room the puppy is allowed in. The ring lives where you sit in the evening; the tire lives by the back door. Having to walk to a toy box is how redirection fails.
When the puppy comes at a hand, put the object in front of the mouth rather than pulling the hand away. Pulling away starts a game. The object arriving first ends one.
Pay the swap. Cheddar, once, the moment the puppy takes the toy instead. You are not bribing, you are marking a choice, and after roughly two weeks of this most puppies start going to the object on their own.
If the puppy gets hold of something it should not have, do not chase. Teaching drop it has the trade sequence, which is the same idea aimed at objects rather than hands.
Three objects rather than a toy box
The standard route is a bin of soft toys, most of them ignored, two of them destroyed, none of them where you need one at the moment you need it. A nylon shape and a rubber shape cover the two textures a puppy actually wants, and keeping them in separate rooms does more than doubling the count would. Should I yelp when it bites?
Some puppies stop, some find it thrilling and escalate. Try it twice. If the puppy winds up rather than backs off, stop and go back to putting an object in the way.
How long does this phase last?
Hard mouthing usually eases between four and six months, and the redirection habit you build now is what carries forward into adult chewing.
Can the puppy have the nylon ring unsupervised?
Not at first. Watch a few sessions, look at the ring afterward, and if pieces are coming off it, take it away and use the rubber one instead.
