Puppy Training Treats: What to Bring to Class

Most puppy classes send a supply list the week before, and it is usually four lines long: a flat collar or harness, a six foot leash, small soft treats, and something better for the hard bits. This kit is the last three of those, picked so they work together on a slippery church-hall floor with eight other puppies in the room. The pouch matters more than people expect. Week one of a group class, from the handler's side
You are holding a leash in one hand. A trainer is talking. Your puppy has just noticed a labrador. Somewhere in that you are supposed to produce a reward inside about two seconds, which is roughly how long the moment lasts before the puppy has moved on to something else.
Everything in this kit exists to buy you those two seconds. That is the entire design brief.
Why these four pieces and not others

The thing every class list includes that is not here
No clicker, and no mat. Both show up on plenty of supply lists. A mat is genuinely useful for the settle exercise in weeks four and five, but most classes hand one out or let you use a folded towel, and buying one in week one means carrying a thing you will not open. Get through the first two sessions, then decide.
Loading the pouch before you leave the house
Cheddar goes in first, a good handful, broken down before you get in the car. Do that at the counter, not in the parking lot.
Liver goes in a small closed bag inside the pouch, or in the opposite pocket. Keep them apart. If the two mix, everything smells like liver and you have just lost your top tier for the night.
Clip the leash at the single point for the walk in, then switch to the double connection once you are in the ring and the puppy is pulling toward the other dogs. Break the liver smaller than a pea. A puppy that is full at minute ten spends the back half of class lying down, and you paid for the whole hour.
What this replaces over six weeks
One bag of cheddar usually outlasts the course. The liver does not, and it is not meant to. Can I just use kibble?
Indoors at home, yes. In a room with seven other puppies, no. Kibble is what the dog already gets for free, and competing with a labrador at four feet takes something that outranks dinner. Choosing treats for a new puppy goes through the ranking in more detail.
How much do I actually bring?
Roughly a cupped handful of cheddar and a tablespoon of liver per hour. That sounds like a lot. Most of it comes home again, and the alternative is running dry in week two of six.
The pouch smells. Now what?
Rinse it under the tap and let it dry open overnight. Silicone with no zipper is easy that way, which is most of why we stock it rather than a fabric one.
