A twelve year old dog usually has not lost interest in working for food. It has lost the willingness to stand up and chase a toy across a kitchen floor to get it. What changes with an older dog
Two things, mostly. The dog eats faster than it used to because it is less mobile between meals, and it will not stand for a fifteen minute activity the way it once did. A slow feeder handles the first. A mat on the floor handles the second. Neither asks the dog to do anything except lower its head, which is the design brief for the whole kit. The slow feeder, and one honest caveat
SodaPup's Flower eBowl is TPE, roughly 8 by 8 inches and 2 inches deep, and it holds 4 cups of food. The depth is what separates it from the shallow maze trays: a dog works down into it rather than pushing kibble around a flat surface, so a slower eater is not standing over it pawing at the rim. It goes in the freezer, the microwave and the dishwasher, which covers wet food, frozen portions and cleanup without a second bowl.
The caveat: SodaPup rates the Flower eBowl for medium and large dogs and for large-breed puppies. For a senior under about 20 pounds, it is more bowl than the dog needs, and a shallower tray from the same line is the better fit. We would rather say that here than have you order it and find out.
The lick mat is the evening, not the meal
The Bones eMat is TPE as well, about 8 inches square, sold in purple or red with a raised bone pattern across the face. It is meant to be spread with peanut butter, yogurt, wet food or a pureed treat, then given flat on the floor. It freezes, and it goes on the top rack of the dishwasher.
Frozen is the version that matters for an older dog. A room temperature mat is gone in four minutes. The same spread frozen solid stretches to fifteen or twenty, and it does it while the dog is lying down. The lick mat topper trio is worth adding if you want the toppings sorted rather than raiding the fridge. Spread it thin across the whole pattern rather than heaping it in the middle, or the dog licks the top off and leaves the grooves full.
Soft rubber, and a bowl that stays put
The Puppy Can Toy is in here for its material, not its name. SodaPup describes it as made from FDA-compliant natural rubber, and it is the softest thing we could put in a senior kit that still holds food: 2.5 inches tall by 1.5 inches wide, 1.7 ounces, with a .625 inch opening for kibble or peanut butter. It fits dogs under 15 pounds, so a big senior should skip it and use the mat for that job instead.
The ceramic bowl from Good Thomas is the plain piece in the kit and the one people question. Good Thomas describes it as a gift for a new dog parent. It earns its spot for an old dog for a different reason: ceramic is heavy, and a dog that puts weight on the rim of a plastic bowl chases it across the floor. Water especially. One bowl that does not move is worth more than a clever one that does.

What is deliberately not in here
No puzzle board with sliding pieces. Those are built around a dog standing over them and using a paw with some precision, and a stiff dog gives up on one inside a week. No rope, no ball, nothing that rolls away. A toy that ends up under the couch is a toy an older dog has stopped playing with, and it is not the dog's fault.
A week of this
Start by moving the meal into the Flower eBowl with nothing else changing. Give it three days before you judge it, because a dog used to a flat bowl will look annoyed on day one. Once meals are settled, add the mat in the evenings, frozen, always in the same spot on the floor. The can toy comes last and only if your dog is small enough for it. Swap the water bowl for the ceramic one whenever it arrives.
Supervise chewing and licking sessions. Nothing here is a medical product, and none of it replaces a conversation with your vet about an older dog's diet.

Questions we get
My dog barely chews any more. Is a lick mat still worth it?
That is exactly the dog a lick mat is for. Licking is a low effort activity, and a mat gives a dog something to do for twenty minutes without asking anything of a stiff jaw.
Can I feed a full meal on the lick mat instead of the bowl?
Wet food, yes, spread thin and frozen. Dry kibble will not stay in the pattern, which is why the kit has both a mat and a deep feeder rather than asking one to do both jobs.
Does the slow feeder work with a topper over kibble?
It does, and that is the best use of it. Mix the topper through so the dog has to work down for the good bits, rather than licking a layer off the top and losing interest. There is more on that in our notes on treats for senior dogs on special diets.
