Senior Dog Travel Kit for the Cargo Area

Measure the space before you pick a size
American Dog's Round Furvana comes in four sizes, from a 25 inch Small to a 45 inch Extra Large, in five colors. Cargo areas vary more than back seats do, so measure across the floor at its narrowest point rather than guessing from the dog's shoulder height. A bed that is slightly too small slides. One that is too large rides up the wheel arches and stops being flat, which for a stiff older dog is worse than no bed at all.
The construction is the part that matters back there. American Dog describes a minky rose fleece top over a 1680D nylon ballistic bottom with a non-skid strip, and an inner mattress pad filled with upcycled prime foam, closed with YKK zippers. The ballistic bottom is the side facing your carpet, so the bed takes the abrasion instead of the trunk liner.
Hair is a weekly job, not a detailing job
Most owners deal with dog hair once a season, with a shop vac, and it never quite comes out. The Rubyloo mini roller is built for the other approach. One towel that does two jobs
The 3D HYDRO-FIL is 20 by 24 inches at 1200 GSM, 80 percent polyester to 20 percent polyamide. 3D rates it at roughly two gallons of absorbency and describes the face as scratch free. What we left out
No hammock cover, and that will surprise some people. A hammock is for a back seat, not a cargo area, and it solves a problem this kit does not have. No ramp either. A ramp is a real answer for a dog that cannot make the jump, but it is a size and slope decision that deserves its own measurement rather than being bundled in as an assumption about your dog.
Setting it up before the next trip
Do the odor spray first, with the hatch open, the night before. Lay the bed in the morning and let the dog get on it in the driveway while the car is still parked, so the first time it stands on that surface is not also the first time the car moves. Put the roller in the door pocket and the towel in a bag by the spare. Keep a handful of freeze-dried treats in the same pocket, because an older dog that has to be coaxed up into a cargo area gets up faster when there is a reason at the top.

Questions we get
Will the bed slide on a plastic trunk liner?
Less than a blanket will, because of the non-skid strip on the ballistic bottom, but nothing stays put on slick plastic forever. Size it to fill the floor between the wheel arches and it has nowhere to go.
Can I use the odor spray with the dog in the car?
Spray it in an empty vehicle and give it time with the doors open before anyone gets in, dog included. Timing and ventilation do most of the work with any interior product.
Is 1200 GSM overkill for drying a dog?
For a small dog, probably. For a sixty pound dog that swam, a thin towel just moves the water around, and the thicker pile is the reason one towel finishes the job instead of three.
