Small Dog Walking Set

On a nine pound dog the harness is the decision and the leash is an afterthought, which is the opposite of how most people shop. The same lunge that a seventy pound dog shrugs off arrives at a very small chest with nowhere to spread, so the fit across the front is what this set is built around. Everything here is sized at the small end rather than borrowed from a medium range: a step-in mesh harness that starts at two pounds, a leash sized down to 5/8 inch webbing, a light collar for tags, and a treat that breaks small. Dogs at the bottom of the size chart
Teacup to about twenty pounds. If you have ever ordered a small harness and found the smallest size still hangs off the dog, that is the problem this set exists for, and it is a real one: most harness ranges start where this one is already three sizes in. Harness, leash, collar, holder, cheese
The EcoBark step-in harness is the reason the set works. EcoBark describes it as double padded soft mesh that steps into place and fastens with a hook and loop belt across the back, and lists seven sizes from XXXS at 2 to 3 pounds up to XL at 20 to 26 pounds. EcoBark also lists plush piping and reflective strips at the shoulders. Step-in matters at this size because a dog who has learned to duck away from anything coming over its head will duck away from it forever.
The leash is EcoBark's comfort grip, and it is scaled to the same range. EcoBark sizes it from 6 foot by 5/8 inch for teacup and extra small breeds up to 4 foot by 3/4 inch for small and medium, and lists a padded grip handle with a reinforced metal anchor clasp and double stitching. EcoBark describes the handle as padded to prevent hand fatigue. The 5/8 inch width is the specific thing here. A 1 inch strap on a six pound dog is more hardware than dog.
The bow tie collar is for tags and nothing else. EcoBark lists it in four neck sizes from 8 to 11 inches up to 16 to 24 inches, with a plastic buckle, a printed camouflage band and a detachable bow tie. Clip the leash to the harness and let the collar carry the identification, which is the division of labor that makes the pair worth buying together.
The Tire Stack holder is ours, designed in house and 3D printed one at a time in Malvern, Pennsylvania. It looks like four stacked race tires, the top one unscrews as a lid, and it weighs about 2 ounces in weather resistant PETG. A braided steel screw-lock cable threads onto the leash and screws shut, and it takes any standard bag roll, arriving with a roll of our strawberry scented ones in it. Hand wipe it clean rather than putting it in a dishwasher.
Cheddar Cheese Bites are the reward for standing still while you do the hook and loop belt up. One ingredient, cheddar, freeze-dried in small batches in our Malvern kitchen and shipped from us in an 8 ounce bag. Freeze-drying leaves the pieces crunchy rather than soft, so they break down to something a ten pound mouth can take on the move. They are dairy, so pick something else off the freeze-dried dog treats page or the treats hub if dairy does not suit.
Three of the five pieces here are made by somebody else, and the harness, leash and collar all come from the same maker, which is the only reason the webbing widths and buckle scale match across them. What is not in the set
No retractable leash. They are popular at this size and they teach a small dog that pulling extends the leash, which is precisely the lesson you do not want on a dog light enough to be dragged by its own enthusiasm.
No coat. Small dogs do often want one and a walking set is not the place for it, because coat sizing runs on back length rather than chest girth and mixing the two charts causes more returns than anything else. Fitting it the first time
Measure the chest behind the front legs before you order anything, not the neck. EcoBark's chart runs on weight ranges with a chest measurement behind it, and a dog between two sizes almost always wants the smaller one if the belt still closes comfortably.
Then do the first fitting indoors with the cheese out. Step-in harnesses ask the dog to put its feet somewhere deliberately, which is a trained behavior rather than an obvious one. Two or three short sessions on the kitchen floor beats one long one at the front door.
Clip the leash to the harness from day one. If you clip to the collar once because the harness is in the wash, you will do it again, and the whole point of buying both was to keep the load off the collar.
What it replaces
A medium harness on its tightest setting, a leash too thick to feel anything through, and a plastic bag knotted round the handle. Buying at the right end of the size chart costs about the same as buying the wrong size twice, and the holder and the treat carry on being useful whatever the dog grows into.
Questions
My dog is between two sizes. Which one?
The smaller one, provided the hook and loop belt closes with room to breathe. A harness that is slightly snug across a padded mesh panel is better than one the dog can reverse out of at a curb.
Can I use the bow tie collar for walking?
Use it for tags. It is a light buckle collar with a detachable bow tie, and on a dog this size the leash belongs on the harness ring.
Will the Tire Stack fit a thin leash?
Yes. The cable loop threads onto any leash, harness ring or belt loop and screws shut, so a 5/8 inch strap is no obstacle. At about 2 ounces it is not going to unbalance a small dog's lead either.
