Large Dog Walking Set

Past about sixty pounds the thing that fails on a walk is rarely the design. It is a buckle, a stitch line or a swivel that was scaled for a spaniel. This set takes the harness, the leash and the collar from one maker, Wildebeest, so the webbing widths and the hardware are consistent across all three, then adds a bag holder and a reward that survives a long walk. Sixty to ninety pounds, still growing into itself
Labradors, shepherds, the bigger retrievers and most of the mixes that end up at that weight. The dog probably walks well enough and still outweighs whichever teenager takes it out on a Saturday. What you want from the hardware is margin: a buckle that is not at the top of its rating, stitching that has been reinforced rather than merely sewn, and a leash you can wrap round your hand without it cutting. Linden harness, Funston leash, Funston collar, holder, heart
The Linden is a front clip harness. Wildebeest describes it as a tool that works as a direct line of control when fitted properly and used with consistent training, which is an unusually honest way for a maker to describe a no-pull harness. Wildebeest lists layers of nylon fabric and webbing with reflective details, all straps adjustable, and a single buckle for getting it on and off. It comes in six colors and five sizes, with girth ranges from 15 to 36 inches. Wildebeest also notes that a leash can connect to the harness and the collar at the same time for a second connection point, which is why the collar in this set is not decorative.
The Funston leash is coated webbing rather than plain nylon. Wildebeest describes the webbing as scratch resistant, stink and pill free, with a lightly textured matte finish that wipes clean, and lists a handle wrapped in nylon fabric for grip with a D-ring for attaching a bag. It is 3/4 inch wide, which Wildebeest says is flexible enough to wrap around a hand and sturdy enough for most dogs, and there is a swivel hook at the clip end to stop the lead twisting. Two lengths, 4 foot and 6 foot. Take the 4 foot for town and the 6 foot for open ground.
The Funston collar is the matching piece and the second connection point. Wildebeest describes it as a webbing collar with a sturdy D-ring and buckle, reinforced with extra stitching for daily use, built in the same layered nylon as the rest of the line. Three sizes cover necks from 8 to 24 inches, and Wildebeest says the fit is adjustable with some room left for growth.
The Tire Stack holder is ours. Four stacked race tires, 3D printed one at a time in Malvern, Pennsylvania in weather resistant PETG, with the top tire unscrewing as the lid and a braided steel screw-lock cable that threads onto the leash and screws shut. It weighs about 2 ounces, takes any standard bag roll, and comes with one of our strawberry scented rolls already loaded.
Beef heart is the treat. One ingredient, freeze-dried in small batches in Malvern and shipped from us in 1.5, 3 and 6 ounce bags. The texture is firm and snaps into small pieces, and it reads milder than liver, which is what you want when a big dog is taking a reward every thirty seconds on a long walk. One maker for the three hardware pieces is the point of this set rather than a coincidence. What is not here
A martingale. Plenty of large dog owners use one and it belongs to a different conversation about slipping collars and sighthound necks, not to a harness set where the leash is already going on the chest ring.
No chew in the required list either, though air-dried duck necks are here as an add on. Ours are one ingredient, air-dried in Malvern, and the shape and size vary naturally piece to piece because it is a whole chew rather than a formed one. Fitting and first walks
Measure the girth at the widest part of the chest and check it against Wildebeest's range for each size rather than guessing from the dog's weight. Fifteen to thirty six inches covers a lot of dogs, and two dogs at seventy pounds can be two sizes apart.
Set every strap on the first fitting and then check the fit monthly for the first year. A harness that fit at nine months is tight at fourteen, and a dog that has been quietly wearing a tight harness for six weeks will tell you about it by refusing to stand for it.
Use the collar as the second connection point once the dog is walking calmly on the chest ring. Two points of contact steady a big dog. Wildebeest builds the Linden expecting exactly that.
What it replaces
A harness bought at pet shop scale and a leash that has already been replaced once. At this weight the usual sequence is a cheap set, a broken clip, and a second cheap set. One line from one maker, sized properly and fitted monthly, gets you past that, and the holder and the beef heart do not care what size the dog is.
Questions
Can I clip the leash to the collar instead?
You can, and on a dog this size the harness is the better anchor for the walk. The collar earns its place as tags plus the second connection point Wildebeest designed the harness around.
Which leash length?
Four foot for sidewalks and traffic, six foot for fields and trails. If you only want one, the 4 foot is the safer default on a large dog in town.
Why beef heart rather than liver here?
Because you will be handing over a lot of it. Heart is milder and snaps into small pieces, so a big dog on a long walk gets frequent rewards without a strong organ smell on your hands the whole way round.
