Blue-Green Algae and Dog-Friendly Lakes: How to Read the Water First

Late summer is when the lakes look most inviting and are most likely to be dangerous. Harmful algal blooms — usually cyanobacteria, commonly called blue-green algae — peak in warm, still, nutrient-rich water from roughly July through September, and dogs are unusually vulnerable to them.

This is one of the few outdoor hazards where the timeline is genuinely short. It is worth knowing what to look for before you are standing on a shoreline with a retriever who has already made up their mind.

Why dogs are at higher risk than people

Three reasons stack up. Dogs drink the water they swim in. They swim in the shallow, still, warm edges where blooms concentrate. And they groom afterwards, licking whatever dried on their coat — so even a dog who did not drink can ingest a meaningful dose.

The toxins involved are not affected by a rinse-off after the fact in the way people hope. Prevention is the whole strategy.

What a bloom looks like

There is no single appearance, which is why "check the water" is harder advice than it sounds. Common signs:

  • Water that looks like spilled paint — opaque green, blue-green, sometimes reddish-brown
  • A surface scum or mat, often collecting on the downwind shore
  • Green streaks or a grainy texture, like grass clippings or pea soup suspended in the water
  • Foam or a film along the waterline, sometimes with a strong musty or septic smell
  • Dead fish or birds nearby

Two things worth knowing. First, blooms move — wind pushes them to one shore, so a lake can look clean at the boat ramp and be dense with scum two hundred yards downwind. Second, a bloom can dissipate visually while toxins remain in the water, and can also appear within a day or two in water that was clear last weekend.

The honest rule

If you cannot see the bottom in shallow water, or the water looks or smells wrong, keep the dog out. There is no test you can perform at the shoreline that will tell you a bloom is safe, and there is no amount of "probably fine" that justifies the downside here.

Many states and counties post advisories for monitored lakes on their environmental agency websites, and popular swimming areas often post signage at the access point. Check both before you drive.

Signs of exposure, and the timeline

Symptoms can begin within fifteen minutes to a few hours. Watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, weakness or stumbling, disorientation, muscle tremors, seizures, difficulty breathing, or pale gums.

If your dog swam in or drank from suspect water and shows any of these, this is an emergency — go straight to a vet or emergency clinic and tell them you suspect algal toxin exposure. Do not wait to see whether it improves. There is no home treatment for this and time genuinely matters.

If your dog got into questionable water but seems fine, rinse them thoroughly with clean water before they groom themselves, prevent licking while wet, and call your vet for advice on what to watch for.

Choosing better water

Not all swimming spots carry the same risk profile.

  • Moving water is generally lower risk than still water. Rivers and streams with flow rarely support the same blooms as a stagnant pond edge.
  • Cool, deep, shaded water beats warm shallow water at the end of a hot week.
  • Managed swimming beaches that post water quality results are worth the extra drive over an unmonitored farm pond.
  • Avoid the downwind shore even on a lake that looks clean elsewhere.

Also worth remembering that algae is not the only water hazard — agricultural runoff, leptospirosis, blue crabs and fish hooks in coastal water, and strong current in rivers all belong on the list. A dog who swims a lot should be up to date on the vaccinations your vet recommends for your region.

Building the habit into a trip

The realistic version of this is not "research every body of water." It is a thirty-second habit at the shoreline: look at the colour, look at the downwind edge, smell the air, look for signage, then decide. If in doubt, walk the trail and skip the swim.
