The Story Behind Sniff & Shift: How a Picky Pup Named Ella Started a Freeze-Dried Treat Brand
Share
Every brand has an origin story. Ours has four legs, a set of very particular taste buds, and a permanent reservation in the passenger seat. Her name is Ella and if it weren't for her, Sniff & Shift wouldn't exist.
What started as one family trying to find treats good enough for their own picky dog turned into a mission: make simple, freeze-dried, single-ingredient treats for the pups who ride along for every adventure. This is how it happened, what we believe, and why we do it the way we do.
It Started With a Picky Pup and an Open Road
Ella came into our lives with strong opinions about food and an even stronger love of car rides. The second the engine turned over, she was in the seat. The problem? Finding a treat that measured up. We'd flip over bag after bag at the store and find long ingredient lists, mystery fillers, and additives we couldn't pronounce not exactly what we wanted to hand our own dog.
So we did what a lot of stubborn dog people do: we decided to make it ourselves. If Ella was going to be our co-pilot for every road trip, car meet, and back-road detour, she was going to eat treats we actually felt good about.
Where the Name Comes From
"Sniff" is the dog. "Shift" is the drive. Put them together and you get the whole vibe: dogs, cars, connection, and the memories made along the way. We build everything around that intersection the place where car culture and dog people overlap way more than anyone talks about.
What We Actually Make
Sniff & Shift treats are freeze-dried and, wherever possible, single-ingredient and locally sourced. Freeze-drying removes moisture without cooking the food at high heat, which helps preserve nutrients and that real-meat aroma dogs go wild for. No fillers, no shortcuts just clean protein your dog can get excited about.
Our lineup lives in a few "divisions," because of course it does:
- Performance Fuel (dog treats): single-ingredient staples like our best-selling freeze-dried beef liver. Browse the whole dog collection.
- Pup-Ornaut Ice Cream: freeze-dried, mess-free frozen treats in flavors like banana peanut butter and pumpkin apple. See the Pup-Ornaut collection.
- Hybrid & Electric Divisions: treats for dogs and cats, plus a cat-specific lineup, because co-pilots come in all species.
- Modified Monthly: a custom monthly treat box you build around your own dog.
Not sure where to start? The Sample Pack is the easiest way to let your pup cast the deciding vote.
The Three Things Every Treat Is Rooted In
From day one, three ideas have driven every decision we make.
1. Adventure
Treats are fuel for everyday moments and big journeys alike a reward at the trailhead, a distraction at the car show, a little "good dog" at a rest stop. Freeze-dried treats are lightweight and shelf-stable, so they're built for glovebox and backpack duty.
2. Quality
Clean ingredients, no fillers, no shortcuts. We keep ingredient lists short on purpose often just one thing so you always know exactly what your dog is eating. It's the same attention-to-detail mindset a gearhead brings to a build, pointed at your dog's snack drawer.
3. Community
Sniff & Shift is more than treats. It's the friendships, the car meets, the DockDogs events, and the co-pilots we've met along the way. We're a family-owned small business, and the community around us is genuinely the best part. As the American Kennel Club notes, the human-animal bond benefits both ends of the leash we just like to celebrate it with a little horsepower.
Made in Malvern, PA
We're proudly based in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and we lean on regional farms for our proteins whenever we can. A shorter supply chain means fresher ingredients and better quality control and it keeps our dollars supporting local farmers and businesses. If you're in southeastern PA, there's a good chance you'll catch us (and Ella) at a car meet, market, or DockDogs event. Check our events calendar to find us in person.
Helpful Tips: How to Choose Treats You Can Feel Good About
Whether you shop with us or not, here's the shortlist we wish every dog parent had:
- Read the first few ingredients. They make up the bulk of the product. Look for named proteins ("beef liver," not "meat by-product").
- Shorter is usually better. Single-ingredient treats leave no room for mystery great for dogs with allergies or sensitive stomachs.
- Mind the 10% rule. Treats should make up no more than about 10% of your dog's daily calories, per PetMD.
- Match the treat to the job. Tiny crumbly bites for training; longer-lasting chews for downtime. Our feeding guide breaks it down.
